Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island Gets Free Update

Spike Chunsoft has released a free update for roguelike dungeon-crawler Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. The free update adds multiple new features and adjustments, with a second free update planned to follow in summer 2024.

The first new feature is the addition of new Sacred Tree Dungeons. These are challenging dungeons with special rules accessible from Shukuba Beach. There are four modes available: Normal Trial lets players replay story dungeons with the same ruleset but with the ability to select a different playable character; Time Trial is a race against the clock to finish a dungeon as quickly as possible; Turn Trial is a test to complete the dungeon in as few turns as possible; and Challenge Trial lets players set their own rules such as not using certain items. Sacred Tree Dungeon includes the ability to use Kokatsu Shiren form, previously exclusive to a single dungeon, in others.

The update also adds a Dojo Challenge Mode to the Monster Dojo. These are mini-stages where players can learn the characteristics of each monster and how best to defeat them. In addition, the Item Holder Storehouse is expanded from 180 items to 960 items, and there are also various balance adjustments and other improvements.

Known in Japan as Shiren the Wanderer 6, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island sees Shiren and his trusted ferret companion Koppa adventure on the eponymous island, where he is joined by his friend Asuka and supported by innkeeper Suzuna. Each time Shiren enters one of the procedurally-generated dungeons, he starts at level 1 with any gear and levels he obtains being lost if he collapses during exploration. The game is currently available on Nintendo Switch; those looking to read more can check out Michael Apps’s review.
