Nintendo held a new Direct presentation, highlighting some upcoming games for both the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch. Plenty of news came out of the presentation, including new release dates and details, as well as the announcement of multiple new titles, primarily for Nintendo 3DS.
The first RPG news was for Ever Oasis, which received a release date of June 23, 2017 for Nintendo 3DS in both North America and Europe. Originally announced at E3 2016, Ever Oasis is developed by Grezzo, a Japanese developer founded in 2007 by Mana series creator Koichi Ishii. The game is an adventure RPG inspired by Egyptian mythology and culture. Players are put in the role of a chosen Seedling, tasked with creating an oasis by working with their partner Isuna. Combat is real-time with players also tasked with going through puzzle-filled dungeons to earn dewadems that can be used to upgrade the oasis.
This was followed by the reveal of two new titles: Monster Hunter Stories and Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters. Monster Hunter Stories is a spin-off that initially released in Japan last year. The game follows a more traditional RPG model geared towards a younger audience and will release for Nintendo 3DS in North America and Europe in fall 2017. Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters is the third version of Yo-kai Watch 2, following Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls, which were released in North America in September 2016 and in Europe in February 2017. Psychic Specters has only been announced for North America at this stage, with a fall 2017 release.
RPG Maker FES was revealed as having a June 23, 2017 release date, with the presentation also noting some tie-ins with the Disgaea series that will be available to creators. It was then followed by another new announcement in the form of a western release for Miitopia. A game where the player's and their friends' Miis can fill the roles of all the characters, Miitopia will be released in North America and Europe for Nintendo 3DS sometime this year. Finally in the Nintendo 3DS section, Nintendo announced that Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia will have various pieces of DLC available after its launch on May 15, 2017. The DLC will include both free and paid items such as extra maps and dungeons, some of which may expand on character backstories, and will be available in separate packs or as part of a season pass.
The majority of games covered in the Switch section were not RPGs, but a few put in appearances. Disgaea 5 Complete appeared briefly to confirm its May 23, 2017 release on Nintendo Switch (May 27, 2017 in Europe). It was also revealed that Battle Chasers: Nightwar, a turn-based RPG based on Joe Madureira's 90s comic book series, will be releasing first on Switch in summer 2017.
