The Rise of the Runelords adventure path continues with
Fortress of the Stone Giants, in which the player characters are tasked to stop
the stone giant armies from over-running the continent of Varisia. As an added plus, the
identity of the true mastermind behind the recent troubles is finally revealed--provided,
of course, the heroes do not get squished to a pulp by the stone giants first.
Chapter four of the adventure path returns the player characters to their roots: from
the small coastal city of Sandpoint where they must fend off the first giant raid, to the
fortress of Jorgenfist deep inside the Storval Plateau.
Unlike previous chapters of the Rise of the Runelords, Fortress of the Stone
Giants's adventure is, for the most part, a straight-forward romp through legions
of stone giants and their allies to defeat the leader of the stone giants. Any
adventuring party taking on hundreds of stone giants head-on is likely to be crushed
underfoot rather quickly, so the players will be challenged to think of more subtle
means of defeating the army.
This volume of Pathfinder continues to flesh out the world of Golarion, providing
an in-depth look at stone giant society as well as the dragons of the Pathfinder
Chronicles campaign setting. Of course, the journey of Eando Kline continues as well,
this time providing insight into the sprawling city of Korvosa. The bestiary
continues to be populated with monsters of all shapes and sizes.
From many angles, this chapter of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path
appears much simpler and more straight-forward when compared to the previous three chapters.
Perhaps this sudden change in adventure style is what makes this adventure segment so
enjoyable, or maybe it is just the chance to beat up on creatures significantly larger
than the typical player character. Whatever the reason, Fortress of the Stone
Giants is quite possibly the best chapter yet.
