Stop Death
featured on July 12, 2006 contributed by Macstorm

This adventure also came from a freelance, message board RPG based on the Final Fantasy job class setup, including support job abilities. I was playing a Warrior with Mime support abilities and was traveling in the company of a Paladin with Warrior support and a White Mage with Blue Mage support. The three of us had been traveling the world in search of a magical tome that was said to teach great magic, such as the Stop Death spell. This spell, if used at the correct time, would have the power to not only prevent a character from dying by restoring them to 1 hit point, but would also make them invincible to all forms of attacks for a few turns, hopefully, giving them time to be healed. This was just one of many spells said to be found in the tome.

After a good deal of searching, we had finally found clues that led us to believe that the tome could be found in the Ruins of Alcabar. These ruins were rumored to be home to some of the deadliest magic creatures in the world. Being a Warrior with no magical abilities, I was quite unnerved at the thought of exploring these arcane ruins, but I had much confidence in my magically adept companions.

We explored the ruins for quite some time, but oddly we found no sign of any creatures, neither magical nor normal. As we rounded a corner leading into a large hallway, the light in the area greatly increased, though we seemed to have been going further down underground. Soon, the three of us entered a grand room filled with many candles and a jeweled pedestal in the front with an old book atop it. Without thinking, the Paladin ran forth and lifted the book right off the pedestal. As soon as he did that, the floor opened up underneath him dropped him and the book into a dark pit. The next second, all of the entrances were sealed and the hole was shut. Just when things looked as if they couldn't get any worse, the candles in the room came to life, two at a time, and began attacking the White Mage and me.

As a Warrior, I was only able to deal light damage to these magical creatures and while the White Mage was trying his best to keep us both alive, we were not making much headway. The battle dragged on for a long time with no sign of the Paladin. The candle creatures didn't deal massive damage, but we were now fighting six of them. As the White Mage healed me once more, he suddenly seemed a nicer target for the magic candles. He was taking heavy damage and I could do nothing to help.

Which ending is the real one?

A.

Right as the White Mage was taking what would have been his last hit, the Paladin floated up through the floor, just in time to cast Stop Death on the White Mage and save his life. The White Mage was safe to heal himself and together the three of us defeated the rest of the candle creatures.

The Paladin had learned Stop Death and many other spells from the Tome of Time and Space, such as Bend Space and Reverse. These spells had allowed him to learn all of the spells in the tome, then to Reverse time. Once back in time, he used the Bend Space spell to allow him to effectively teleport through the floor. Using all that he had learned, we were able to survive the trial.

B.

Right as the White Mage was taking what would have been his last hit, the Paladin floated up through the floor, just in time to cast Stop Death on the White Mage and save his life. However, the casting of this new spell left the Paladin drained and looking like a tasty new target for the candle creatures. They quickly descended on the Paladin, taking him to the point of death, when I used my Mimic ability to copy his Stop Death spell, saving his life as well. With all three of us safe, we banded together to defeat the rest of the candle creatures.

It was a close call, but we all made it.

C.

Right as the White Mage was taking what would have been last hit, the Paladin floated up through the floor, just in time to cast Stop Death on the White Mage, saving his life. With the White Mage safe and the Paladin much stronger, the candle creatures came for me. I was no match for them and the Paladin could not cast the spell again so quickly. As a last ditch effort, I attempted to Mimic the Stop Death spell, but I was too late and died.

These spells had allowed him to learn all of the spells in the tome, then to Reverse time. Once back in time, he used the Bend Space spell to allow him to effectively teleport through the floor. It was not enough to save me though.
