Liv: In the future, would you rather see more games from franchises or independent games? In addition, how do you think companies feel about this issue?
Jesus: Well, I think what we need are some new franchises.
Jesus: No one seems to be looking for the next big thing.
Derek: I'd prefer a bit of each, really.
Michael: Well, it's safer for companies to make games in established franchises, but I think we tend to get more creative titles with individual games.
Michael: If it's one or the other, give me stand-alone titles.
Jesus: This isn't just RPGs, but the whole gaming industry is overly reliant on sequels.
Derek: it's nice to have new stuff, but I'd also like more of what is already established as working
Jesus: Michael - Oh, of course.
Liv: I would agree. Heck, even the movie industry now is overly focused on sequels.
Jesus: But even these franchises were once new.
Michael: Guh. The movie industry. Don't get me started. :/
Jesus: Liv - The game industry is worse than the movie industry in that regard.
Michael: Jesus - Nah, I disagree.
Jesus: I mean, the game industry will slap a franchise name on ANYTHING.
Jesus: Which is what I was trying to talk about before.
Jesus: I mean, does Phantasy Star really need to be made into a dungeon hack?
Jesus: And an FF shooting game?
Josh: Heh.
Derek: Poor Shining......
* Liv will agree with this. ^^;
Josh: I'm happy with independent games...sometimes they just
deliver quality without having to worry about whether they're going to screw it
up later.
* Josh points at Okami.
Jesus: Hehe, true.
Jesus: A good standalone is fun.
* Liv points at Boku to Maoh (Okage).
Liv: I love that game. =)
Jesus: The problem is that a game will come out, but unless it's a franchise, there's no marketing for it.
Josh: Okage? :(
Jesus: Hehe, too true.
Michael: It's got good art direction, but I'd love to stab whoever designed those dungeons.
Liv: Yeah, Okage: Shadow King.
Jesus: Michael - That bad...
Josh: I know what it is, I'm boggled as to how you like it
Derek: Yeah.....those urns....
Liv: I just loved how the story was sooooo different, but I agree with the dungeon thing...
Michael: How to smash ten thousand pots!
Liv: That was annoying. ^^;
Michael: I've started that game four times already... >.>
Josh: And the battles take half an hour due to excessive spell casting time.
Liv: But Ruka was the cutest hero ever!!
Jesus: And then there's FFXI....
Jesus: One of the most generic MMOs ever.
Josh: Guild Wars is a great franchise...unfortunately, it's rather overshadowed by WoW.
Jesus: Well, everything is overshadowed by WOW.
Michael: So is every other MMO right now. :/
Liv: I've heard a lot of good things about Guild Wars, but I've never played it.
Jesus: Michael - Indeed.
Jesus: It's funny, but the only MMO that non-MMOers can name other than WoW is FFXI.
Jesus: Which is probably because of the FF name.
Michael: It's another similar situation - one 800 pound gorilla dominating the market.
Derek: ^^;
Jesus: Michael - Only in MMOs, it's even more apparent.
Jesus: Half the market plays WoW.
Jesus: The rest are scattered to the winds.
Michael: Yeah. How many subscribers are they claiming now? 5 million? 7?
Michael: Lots, anyway.
Jesus: I think it hit 7, yeah.
Jesus: That's bigger than some 3rd-world countries, I think.
Michael: Which is why I'm surprised to hear about all these little Korean MMOs doing so well.
Michael: You'd think there wouldn't be room for 'em.
Jesus: Michael - Well every game will find a niche.
Liv: They're so much fun!
Josh: Well, most Korean MMOs are level grinding...just with cute
characters.
* Liv enjoys the cute characters...
Liv: =)
Michael: Heh.
Josh: But, I mean...hardcore level grinding. As in, nothing else to do.
Jesus: Josh - Well most MMOs are just level grinding, period.
Michael: Well, a good sense of style goes a long way. ^^
Derek: Yeah. =/
Josh: RO - What was the point of THAT game?
Jesus: To level, basically.
Josh: Exactly.
Liv: What's RO?
Liv: Oh...
Josh: Ragnarok Online
Liv: I remember now.
Jesus: Ragnarok Online.
Derek: Ragnarok Online.
Liv: XD
Jesus: Hehe.
Jesus: But WoW is another example of the dangers of franchise dominance.
Liv: What do you think companies feel about designing franchise games as opposed to independent games?
Jesus: Other devs are scared to make MMOs because of it.
Jesus: Liv - Well the publishers probably see it as easy money.
Derek: Indeed.
Michael: Yeah, there's been very little innovation in MMOs lately, probably due to WoW's dominance.
Jesus: Michael - Which is weird to me.
Michael: Weird how?
Jesus: If I wanted to play something that's just like WoW, wouldn't I just play WoW?
Jesus: MMOs aren't like other RPGs.
Jesus: They require a near fanatical dedication to do well in.
Jesus: And ask that you stay for months at a time, if not years.
Jesus: If you're trying to pull people out of the game they've been playing for a year or more, wouldn't you wanna offer something different to intice people away?
Liv: I would agree with that philosophy, lol.
Jesus: Wow, thought I'd netsplit for a sec.
Jesus: Um, looks like we're done, unless someone's got something else to say...
Liv: Alright, yeah, I was just going to say something.
Jesus: Oh?
Liv: Does anyone else have any last comments they'd like to add
in?
* Jesus is interested.
Jesus: Hehe, well I do.
Liv: Ahaha, it was nothing intriguing.
Derek: Not I.
Liv: Said the fox.
Jesus: If you wanna see something other than FF derivitives, buy other stuff!
Michael: Heheh.
Liv: I agree!
* Derek too.
Jesus: I'm sure Nintendo will publish some non-FFy RPGs if Baten Kaitos Origins does well.
Liv: Alright, and with thaaaaat...
Liv: We shall be done~!
Liv: Thanks everyone!
Josh: Allrighty
Jesus: Done we are.
