Liv: Overall, do you like the direction that RPGs are going? If not, how would you make it differ?
David: VI had the best graphics.
Matthew: It's a tight choice for me. Both are classics for personal reasons.
Michael: I want companies to stop worrying about making things pretty and make them fun.
Rob: Amen.
Derek: Yeah.
Matthew: Yeah.
Liv: I agree wholeheartedly.
Matthew: We're talking to you, Square Enix.
Rob: I miss my imagination. : (
Michael: If they can do both, then more power to them.
David: If the companies keep true to what older RPGs have, then
you'll have a good RPG.
Matthew: That's a big "if," though.
David: Yeah.
David: I really think Square is running out of ideas.
Matthew: Yes, but we've already seen older RPGs... it does wear thin over time.
Michael: But at the same time, I don't want to play something new that looks 10 years old.
Rob: Don't buy my game then. : (
Liv: I want companies to start putting some humor back into games. I mean, sure, it should still be a serious game, but too much serious stuff just makes the game look stupid.
Michael: Homebrew is a different story.
Matthew: They should do their best with graphics, of course. That's the main part of all these new generation systems. But for RPGs, graphics are not the priority.
Michael: Radiata Stories.
Rob: I would love to see some indie RPGs come out, honestly - preferably ones that don't crash.
David: I've noticed some RPGs with the best graphics have the suckiest story lines.
: P
Matthew: David, example!
* Matthew doesn't play enough games.
David: Grandia 3 has good graphics, but the story line sucks when you get on disc 2.
Matthew: Aha, haven't played it.
Liv: For some reason, I just like games better when they've got a nice 2D interface, lol.
Michael: Sometimes I just don't want the 3rd dimension. : P
Michael: I was playing a friend's homemade RPG last week. It looks bleh, the gameplay was bleh, but he put a lot of work into the story and the humor, and I had to keep playing.
Rob: You told me about that!
Matthew: That's what I'm trying to do with RPG Maker XP.
Michael: Yes, he used RPG Maker XP.
David: I've only played one RPG Maker game I really like.
Matthew: Oo, competition.
Liv: I love RPG maker!!
Matthew: I haven't played any. Heh.
David: It was diffrent than over RPG Maker games, even though the music was from different games, it had its own custom system and original story.
David: You can tell the game how you want to fight the enemies: if you wanna fight random battles or if you wanna go up to them to fight.
Liv: Some companies just try to make games too epic.
Michael: True, and they fall short.
* Liv nods vigorously.
Rob: "I am a lonely farmer boy who is on a quest to save the universe with my trusty rake and cure spell."
Matthew: Regarding RMXP, I don't care enough about custom systems, graphics, or sound. I just enjoy using existing material as a vehicle to let my imagination run amok.
Michael: Indeed.
Matthew: Are there any RPGs where the world isn't in danger?
Josh: Harvest Moon.
Liv: I LOVE Harvest Moon!
Derek: Quite a few.
Liv: I could play Harvest Moon all day.
David: Harvest Moon... I don't really consider that an RPG... it's more like a sim game.
David: A farm sim game. : P
Matthew: I figure when I write my epic fantasy novel, it'll be about a guy trying to go cross-country to attend the last performance of a composer.
Liv: Ahahahahahahahaha.
Rob: I would play that.
Matthew: Well, the game I'm making is, of course, about saving the world. Let's see... how does the opening go?
Josh: It was a dark and stormy night?
Matthew: Oh, I don't remember...
Matthew: But there's constant game overs. You talk to an old man: "You shouldn't play these games! Go outside and get some fresh air!" Then, game over. I'm evil.
David: I can tell ya'll two games that have bugs with the leveling. That hurts the character... one isn't a big deal, but it's noticable... and the other is a WTF bug.
Rob: Basically, give me something that is at least somewhat original, with gameplay that doesn't bore me to tears. I'd rather the story do that.
Liv: Ahahahaha.
Michael: Ok, where were we?
Liv: Ok, let's all start to gather up our final comments!
Matthew: "Hm. I seem to have amnesia. Looks like I'm a video game character."
David: Sounds like Tina/Terra.
Matthew: Yeah, but she was a whiner.
David: She was emo.
Matthew: And she kept streaking.
Josh: I think if Liv was a game character, she would be a non-evil Lemina.
Liv: Oooh!
* Liv likes that idea.
Liv: Any final comments on the *direction rpgs are going*??
Matthew: There should be more Xenosagas. That's all I've got.
Michael: I don't want to play a new game that takes more time to learn than to play. I don't want to play a pretty game that sucks. I want more innovation, but I want it to be traditional. I just will not be pleased with anything it seems.
Matthew: And less MMORPGs.
David: I wish to play a game with a good story line.
Rob: Give me gameplay with a story or give me death. Preferably the former.
Liv: And good, *original* characters.
Josh: I want content that actually has quality, rather than tons of lackluster things to do.
David: Not something that changes the War of Ragnarok to War of Kangaroo.
Rob: I would buy that.
David: Don't buy ToP GBA. : P That's what they did.
Liv: Oooook and weeee're DONE!
Liv: Ta-dah!
Josh: Sweet.
Rob: Oh God, that port was so atrocious.
Derek: Yay!
Matthew: I think we should all look to Final Fantasy Tactics for what a game's story should be like.
Liv: Thank you everyone!!!
Rob: Teh end.
