The PS3, Final Fantasy III and... SSBB?
!
!

Liv: Hello and welcome to tonight's Roundtable!

Liv: We have two E3 attendees here that everyone can question since I'm sure there are a lot of questions about E3.

Liv: With that, I leave the floor open for questions.

Gabriel: May I inquire about the modestly dressed booth females?

Jesus: Oh, I have a question.

Jesus: The admittedly low-res video we got to see didn't really convey it, but the PS3 didn't look that much better than 360 if at all. Was that the impression you guys left with?

Matt: I'm just writing about that exact topic in Q&A right now.

Matt: It looks VERY nice, but so does the Xbox 360, and no... I really couldn't discern much of a difference.

Jerry: Riiiiiiidge racer!

Jerry: *ahem* * XeroZohar didn't get a look at the PS3, unfortunatly.

Jesus: I was about to say, does it look $200 more than 360 nice?

Gabriel: An almost $200 difference in price doesn't justify "a little better than the 360."

Matt: Definitely not, though the 200 extra bucks would hopefully do more than just offer extra graphical goodness.

Gabriel: Not with what they showed us, though.

Josh: Meh. Graphics are nice and all...but Microsoft doesn't hold a candle to Sony's third party support.

Jesus: MS has great Western support, and I can see Japan's devs moving to Wii.

Josh: Right - western support, but probably 90% of the games I own are initially made by Japanese companies.

Jesus: Ouro - I have a very different collection.

Jesus: I lean rather heavy on western games.

Josh: Well, I lean towards RPGs, and...well...

Josh: Western companies, for the most part (at least with consoles), go, "Ar-Pee-Gee? Is that a gun?"

Kyle: [The price] was lower than I thought it'd be.

Jerry: It's still too much.

Kyle: I was kinda hoping for $400... I wasn't expecting the whole 2 price thing.

Jesus: I'm shocked by the price, really.

Jesus: Just who the heck is Sony selling this thing to? Blu-Ray nuts? Will they buy games enough to make up for it?

Matt: I was, too. Even though people had guessed it'd be $500 beforehand, I had thought it would go for $400.

Matt: Now now, there WILL be many people who do buy it, and there are lots who are very excited.

Jesus: On day one, sure.

Gabriel: Blue ray units are a heck of a lot more expensive, and 600 bucks is still somewhat of a bargain.

Jerry: The buyers go where the games go.

Matt: I'm sure, as usual, there will be some up on eBay for $50,000 or something.

Jesus: But EVERYTHING sells out on day one.

Gabriel: Except maybe the Saturn...

Matt: Indeed... I think you're implying that sales will drop off very quickly, and while i think that might be a pretty good guess, it IS going to be the holiday season.

Jerry: The Sony nuts and those who can afford to get all the systems will be the primary buyers, I think.

Matt: And the rich parents.

Jesus: But that's not a mass market.

Gabriel: That's $600 WITHOUT tax, right?

Kyle: Yeah, and supposedly, the $500 one doesn't have a lot of features.

Kyle: Like... wireless controllers and such.

Jesus: I've got a couple wireless controllers, but I've never really been sold on them.

Kyle: My dogs just have a habit of getting tangled in the chords and ripping my PS2 off of high places, lol.

Jesus: Sony's trying to reach McDonald's penetration with a 5-star price.

Jerry: No, it's not. This is where they shot themselves in the foot.

Matt: $600 without tax-- $660 Canadian. With tax, it comes to over $750 in Ontario.

Gabriel: Here in South East Asia, that comes out at about 800 bucks.

Donovan: Sony is really hurting the average consumer with the exhorberant price point.

Jerry: The $500 one is gimped, no two ways about it.

Jerry: Less space, no wifi, no HDMI (if that matters to you)...

Gabriel: 20GB is smallish.

Donovan: Yep.

Jerry: It can't be upgraded either. You get the $500 one, you're stuck with it unless you buy the more expensive model for those extras.

Matt: Which, of course, would cost extra money anyway.

Kyle: Yeah, luckily the slim PS2s are kind of durable.

Alicia: It's like they took the $600 out back, shot it twice in the face and then put it back in the box for $500.

Jesus: That's one way to see it.

Gabriel: If the games are largely based on Blu-Ray format, wouldn't 20GB be too small?

Kyle: How many gigs does a Blu-Ray disc hold exactly?

Kyle: I heard around 50.

Gabriel: It holds only 3 installable games, I think.

Jesus: Not unless they install to the drive.

Donovan: I'd have to say yes, then.

Jerry: This Blu-Ray stuff is nonsense for games.

Matt: I'm sure that it will be big enough for the "average" gamer, though, to be honest.

Jesus: Does the average gamer NEED an HD?

Jesus: The Xbox only really used it for memory saves.

Jerry: It just promotes laziness for developers.

Jesus: Pissed me off something serious, as I never got to use that Memory Unit I bought at launch.

Gabriel: Well, it makes loading faster....

Jesus: Are you nuts!?

Jesus: Halo's levels took forever and a day to load!

Gabriel: Heh. RF Online on my PC takes 5 minutes to load.

Jesus: That's because you install it.

Jesus: You don't install 360 games - the levels are dumped.

Matt: I don't think Sony is dull enough to offer the 20 GB if it wouldn't be big enough for anything.

Kyle: Have they said anything about PS3 memory cards?

Jerry: Nobody needs 50 gigs of space for a video game!

Josh: A 20GB HD will supply me with enough space for ANY game save I create. Period.

Liv: I'll only consider buying the PS3 if enough good games come out for it.

Matt: You and me both, Liv.

Liv: The reason I never bought PSP was because I never saw the need without enough good games.

Jesus: I bought that hunk of junk expecting good games.

Jesus: The only things I play on it anymore are the Megaman games.

Donovan: That's a key point - the games.

Matt: The main reason that Nintendo's next generation is looking so attractive is because they have the most attractive games to me.

Matt: I don't care about specs, really... nor do I know much about them.

Liv: In my opinion, if a lot of great games come out, then a lot of people will buy the PS3.

Donovan: I haven't seen a single game that will pursuade me to down $600 for that system.

Matt: Indeed, Donovan.

Jerry: Games are all that matters.

Gabriel: The only problem is that no real launch games have been announced yet.

Jesus: I honestly can't see PS3 reaching mass market levels.

Kyle: I don't plan on getting a PS3 until Final Fantasy XIII comes out... hopefully, by then, there will be some great games and a cheaper price.

Jesus: Yeah, hopefully by the time FFXIII is finally out, the price will drop.

Kyle: In two years... probably AT LEAST a $50 price drop.

Matt: We hope - though I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see FFXIII out sooner than we might think.

Donovan: Yes, indeed. They're developing quicker than I thought they would.

Jesus: They can't have been working on it that long.

Kyle: Well, they didn't start FF13 on the PS3 until last E3.

Matt: Possibly... but I'd bet that after the length of time we waited for FFXII, XIII will come out quickly.

Liv: I'm excited for FF13!

Kyle: The FFVII Tech Demo was what made them do that.

Jesus: Though hopefully the FFVII remake talk will cease.

Jerry: I see Sony losing money because most people who want the exclusive titles (at least, the ones which don't magically get ported as if the exclusivity deal wasn't signed) will wait until the price drops.

Gabriel: So are you guys expecting the PS3 to bomb?

Jesus: Expecting, and in some ways hoping.

Donovan: Mmmm... too early to tell.

Kyle: Oh! There is a rumor that there will be a 4th Final Fantasy XIII called "Haeresis."

Jesus: Oh geez...

Jesus: Why not just get rid of the numbers and be done with it?

Kyle: Someone found a trademark for it.

Matt: One thing Square/S-E has maintained so far is a 3-per-console "rule" of sorts.

Matt: Main series FF games, I mean.

Gabriel: I expect a radical Sony repricing strategy in a next few months.

Jesus: How? They're kind of stuck now.

Gabriel: The only option they've got is to, at least, remove all non-essential components to lower the price, then sell those components spearately.

Gabriel: Like the wifi, HD, etc.

Jesus: That's impossible unless they STILL haven't gone into production.

Jesus: And without HDMI, why have Blu-Ray at all?

Jesus: Isn't the point of Blu-Ray 1080p?

Gabriel: Seriously, most people probably won't be needing them until a few months in - when they get their new paychecks.

Donovan: I never realized that "3-per" rule...but you're right.

Jesus: I thought they announced two for Wii and two for PS3.

Matt: Yep... so to get three in, I'd guess that FFXIII comes out in Japan by the end of next year!

Kyle: I think that might be pushing it a bit.

Liv: Hey Xero, I want to know more about FFIII! Did you see anything on that?

Jesus: Yeah, how's III DS coming along?

Jerry: FFIII was gorgeous.

Jerry: I didn't get THAT much time with it, though.

Matt: FFIII was indeed gorgeous.

Matt: The music was wonderful... I strained to hear it above the crowds.

Matt: I got through the whole demo part.

Jerry: Oh yes. I managed to get on the station with the loudest speaker.

Jerry: It was really nice.

Kyle: I liked the way the FMVs look on the DS for FF3.

Liv: Oh, I have a quick question - is the character Luneth a guy or a girl?

Liv: I couldn't tell from the pictures.

Donovan: I think it's a girl.

Matt: I honestly can't quite remember, Liv.

Jesus: Can you ever tell in FF games? *JK*

Matt: Haha, great point.

Kyle: Lol.

Liv: Ahahaha, it's true.

Jerry: Oh shush, not that tired argument again.

Jesus: 0:)

Liv: It's just, in the FMV, it looks more like a guy... but I had thought it was a girl.

Matt: But anyways, the [FFIII] demo was very good.

Matt: A little bit of a high encounter rate...

Kyle: It reminds me of early PS1 graphics.

Matt: FFIII?

Matt: It reminds me of FFIX graphics.

Jesus: Not bad, considering how bit FFIII is likely to be.

Jerry: My characters were way overpowered in the demo, and were still just freelancers.

Kyle: What did the battle system feel like?

Matt: Very traditional... very loyal to the original.

Matt: Despite the graphics, it was turn-based completely - FF1-style.

Donovan: I can't wait to play it.

Jerry: It was a typical Final Fantasy.

Jesus: How did the stylus play into it?

Matt: No stylus that I could tell.

Jerry: It wasn't ATB that I could tell.

Matt: No, you put in all party members' commands at once, per turn, and they execute according to agility.

Kyle: Good - I lost my stylus. XD

Jesus: They sell those for $5.00 for packs of three.

Kyle: Yeah, I know, I just haven't gotten around to getting a new one.

Donovan: I'm excited to have the only one that hasn't been released here.

Jerry: The stylus could be used in menus.

Liv: At E3, was there any sign of a new Kirby game?

Matt: Hmm, not that I saw, Liv.

Liv: Darn!

Jerry: They're making one, but there wasn't a playable demo there, no.

Jesus: Kirby's in the new Smash Bros., what else do you want?

Jesus: And he's gonna fight Snake!

Donovan: Kirby's so cute.

Kyle: Aw, yeah!

Kyle: Brawl is gonna rock.

Matt: I've heard something about a new Kirby as well, just not at E3.

Jerry: Puyo!

Gabriel: Solid Snake's supposedly in SSB.

Jerry: He is.

Jesus: Indeed.

Kyle: Yup, he is.

Kyle: Has anyone seen the trailer?

Liv: Yes.

Jerry: Yep.

Gabriel: I want a cardboard box, dang it!

Josh: </obligatory SSBB plug>

Jesus: "It's showtime."

Kyle: I downloaded it, lol.

Matt: Hahaha.

Kyle: Pit looks pretty cool.
