Square to Self-Publish in US

Square, one of the most prolific and successful software development companies of all time, may have decided to return to the US market not only as developer, but as publisher.

According to Squaresoft (Square's product distribution branch) sources, "We have not yet announced which titles to release, but if we do anything on the PlayStation, we'll publish it ourselves." At this time, Square has a large library of games in Japan that are possible considerations: Xenogears, Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, Front Mission Alternative, Front Mission 2, Soukaigi, Brave Fencer Musashiden, Parasite Eve, and Final Fantasy V, to name a few. However, it's more than likely that Sony still has a few of these titles under its license, and any self-published games will most likely come from those titles still in development. This is great news for everybody who's been dying for any of these games.

As early as late 1997, Square had published all its PlayStation titles through an exclusive arrangement with Sony, which had proved profitable on both sides. When the agreement expired, industry pundits speculated whether Square would choose to publish its own titles, as it did during the Super Nintendo era. That question seems to be answered.
