More information and media has been released for the latest game in Gust's Atelier series, Atelier Sophie: Alchemist of the Mysterious Book. The recently-announced title is coming to Japan on September 25, 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita, and does not appear connected to the recent Dusk trilogy of titles.
The first set of new information revolves around how synthesis works and how Sophie can build on her past syntheses to become a skilled alchemist. Players first select a mixing pot, which can determine future synthesis actions and the effect of the resulting item. Then players select the ingredients, with ingredients of the same type potentially having differences between them and the placement of ingredients possibly producing bonuses. After ingredients are selected, players can choose the bonus effects they want the finished item to have. If the desired effect is not available players can go back and reselect the ingredients. Finally, players can select the special characteristic in the finished item.
Once a synthesis is completed, Sophie may get an idea for a new recipe to synthesise. Other details involve the doll-like character Plachta and how players can customise her and alter her abilities. Players have four slots in which to place items, with each slot open to a certain type of item. There is a large number of possible combinations with players able to freely customise Plachta at Sophie's studio.
Finally, there are introductions to two new characters, both childhood friends of Sophie. Monika Ellmenreich is an assistant at the local church and is good at both literature and fencing. Though generally with a serious demeanour, she enjoys singing and visting Sophie to eat sweets. Oskar Bellmer, meanwhile is a greengrocer like his father. He has a special connection with plants, is fairly lazy, and doesn't exercise much.
