Blizzard Entertainment's gaming festival BlizzCon got off to a huge start this week when the company announced the second expansion for their top-selling MMORPG World of Warcraft. Wrath of the Lich King will, among its slew of new features, open up a whole new area, raise the game level cap, and add a new hero class.
"This expansion will add some of the most infamous characters and settings from the Warcraft universe to World of Warcraft," said president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime. "In addition to new story content, Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a number of features specifically requested by players over the past couple of years. We're looking forward to sharing further details with everyone as development progresses."
Wrath of the Lich King will allow players to explore the frozen lands of Northrend, first introduced to the Warcraft universe in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. In that game, Arthas Menethil merged with the soul of Ner'zhul and in doing so became the dreaded Lich King with powers over the undead. He now rules the tundras and frozen ice fields of Northrend, controlling his undead hordes from Icecrown Citadel. It is into this forbidding landscape that players will venture in the upcoming expansion.
Aside from a new wilderness to explore, the expansion will also add a number of unique features, building upon the original game and the first expansion The Burning Crusade. Once certain requirements are met, players will be able to create the Death Knight hero class, which will start at a high level and have a unique skill set. The game's level cap will also rise from level 70 to level 80 and players will be able to learn new abilities as they progress. A new "Inscription" profession, allowing players to enhance existing spells and abilities in the game, will be added. Player versus player dynamics will change as well with the introduction of siege weapons and destructible buildings. The expansion will also add a new level of customization with new hairstyles and dance animations.
Wrath of the Lich King in still under development so there's no word yet on a scheduled release date. In the meantime, the expansion's website is already up and running here.
