Belgium-based game developer Larian Studios is about to release a new RPG into the North American market known as Divine Divinity (previously known as Divinity: Sword of Lies). Apart from the entertaining name, Larian Studios plans to innovate as well as imitate the best aspects of recent PC RPGs. The standard fantasy characters, such as dwarves, elves, and orcs, will all make an appearance. The isometric viewpoint will remind players of Diablo II, as will the realtime, fast-paced combat system. For players not used to realtime battles in a PC RPG, a pause feature will be available, allowing for a more strategic approach to battling.
The innovations of Divine Divinity appear soon after the game is seen in motion. The AI of the enemy characters is particularly strong, allowing for a very unique experience, with enemy characters setting up ambushes and flanking maneuvers. This is made possible through an "agent system," in which each character has specific behavioral switches that can be thrown by a player's actions. This advanced behavioral system combined with an extremely seamless gameworld featuring over twenty thousand screens' worth of terrain should allow for a very immersive RPG.
