Daybreak Games, the developer behind the third iteration of the popular MMORPG, has announced the cancellation of EverQuest Next. President Russell Shanks explained in a letter posted on the company's website that development was halted due to the fact that "it wasn't fun." Rather than release a subpar experience that doesn't meet gamer's expectations, the developer has opted to scrap the project entirely. Shanks sees the role of the developer as "dreaming big, pushing hard and being brutally honest with where you land."
Shanks reassures devoted fans of the franchise that EverQuest's future is as important to the developers as it is to the players. "Rest assured that our passion to grow the world of EverQuest remains undiminished," he says in closing, opening the door to another project coming sometime in the future.
