Francis "Fermat's Last Theorem" Gayon
Passacaglia in A-flat
Classical Game(s): Luminous Arc
MP3

Comment: This piece was originally composed for a pediatric resident's wedding a while back. I drew inspiration from Pachelbel's famous Canon in D. The piece was initially supposed to be a canon as well, but I found a passacaglia's structure to be much easier to work with, so I went with that. Sadly, this piece ended up being discarded.
Composed for string orchestra using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

Comment: ...or, more formally, the Concerto for Solo Violin, Strings, and Harpsichord with Basso Continuo in F-sharp minor (Krebs) - III. Allegretto. This piece was actually started earlier than the Windurst Waltz, but ended up getting finished later since I got "composer's block" in this movement. I got stuck in the first solo segment.
Like in the first movement, the tutti opens with the main theme of the original piece (or at least a part of it) as the ritornello. I employed a time signature change again, this time from 3/4 to 2/4, but the theme is still quite recognizable. I took fragments from the original piece and used them at the beginning of the solo sections.
This mix may not be for everyone since it's in a quasi-Baroque style様ike something straight out of Vivaldi's repertoire, but I still hope that you'll give it a try.
Composed using Sibelius 4 and rendered by Kouen using SONAR 6 Producer Edition. The GPO samples for a Stradivarius used for the solo violin are quite lovely, no?

This movement employs the ritornello form which is, put simply, like a rondo but with the ritornello or refrain (played by the tutti) appearing in fragments. I changed the time signature from 4/4 to 6/8, but I'm pretty sure you'll still recognize the theme used. Note that Theme of Aya has several "layers" to it. I took each of those layers and used them to initiate each of the solo segments (the "episodes" in between the repeated parts).

This movement is closest to the original piece out of all three movements. Se Il Mio Amore Sta Vincino is a lyric piece to begin with and was perfect for a second movement, so I just tweaked it a little幼hanged the melody here and there, put repeats, etc.

Comment: The main theme I used is Devin, though some may find it unrecognizable due to the modifications I made but the pattern is the same. I also added some Hero as a contrasting second theme. I hope you like this arrangement though it's a bit hurried. I had to finish more than 60% of the piece in a day since I was busy arranging a vocal piece amongst other things. I hope it's... metallic enough.
Composed using Sibelius 4. Thee wonderful rendering is by Kouen, whom I sincerely thank for braving to tackle 18 different instruments.

Piano Game(s): Secret of Mana

Comment: Last year, I was skimming through some classic games and came across this SNES game called Secret of Mana. Honestly, I have never played the game, but based on the reviews I read, it seemed like something I would enjoy. And so I played it. The first time I entered Potos, I heard this melody that I instantly liked and eventually decided to make a piano arrangement of it. I ended up with... this! If you listen, you will also recognize that I used the main theme in the presto section.
This piece is dedicated to my dear friend Kouen, who is, himself, an excellent pianist. He rendered this submission as well as all of my other submissions using SONAR 6 Producer Edition.
Composed using Sibelius 4.

Comment: A fallen caryatid
crushed beneath the weight
but beautiful none the less.
A martyr of strength
not of the body
but of the will.
Knowing she is crushed
but persisting on,
bearing her load,
in her own special triumph.
She is not beaten
for she endures that burden
too large for her
because it is her own.
and therein lies her beauty.
-Shel Silverstein
When I selected "The Caryatid" as my subject poem, I was immediately able to narrow down my choices for my main theme to two, both from the Final Fantasy series: Yuna's Suteki da ne and Aerith's Theme. Both were women who carried such responsibility on their shoulders. But then I thought that Aerith fit the poem better, as in it, the caryatid ends up broken but persists on carrying her burden. Similarly, Aerith died and yet it was her who ended the game with her prayers for Holy and her guidance of the Lifestream.... I, then, selected a complementary theme and ended up with Theme of Sadness. I went almost a la Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf with this one: the strings representing the caryatid; the brasswinds, the burden she carries; the woodwinds are just that, winds, caressing the caryatid as time passes; the percussions appear here and there, but they mostly add "weight" to the "burden" of the brasswinds.
I would have let the music speak for itself, as it IS a symphonic poem, but noting that some listeners, even those whom I knew personally, misinterpreted my Across Time, Across Worlds in Round 2, I shall go ahead and explain some evocations I used. Please check the forums if you wish to see the details.I know that there already exists a beautiful arrangement of Aerith's Theme and it certainly put some pressure on me. I hope I didn't mangle this classic; that most of you like it; and if not, then I hope that it was, at least, bearable.
Composed using Sibelius 4 and rendered, as always, by Kouen using SONAR 6.

Comment: I delve once more into what I consider to be my musical weakness: electronic mixes. This is the first time since Round 4 of "The Grand Audition" that I tinkered with an electric guitar. I certainly hope I did well enough in this remix.
I used Lloyd as the main subject, but I'm sure many fans will recognize fragments of the main theme added here and there for some variation.
Composed for flute, trumpet, trombone, electric guitar, electric bass, electric organ, drums, and strings using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen with GPO samples using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

Comment: This piece was a special request of a friend and fellow medical student named Tenken.
Just as Karma speaks of two glass spheres, I made two versions of this piece based on a concept in optics known as spherical aberration葉he blurring of an image formed by a spherical mirror which occurs because parallel rays striking the mirror far from the optic axis are focused at a different point. This first piece is entitled Object; the second, Image. The characteristics of each would follow what their name entails optics-wise.
Composed for piano using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

Comment: This is a pretty simple arrangement of a piece I really liked. I wasn't crazy about the lyrics, though... I used Sibelius 4 for the composition and the rendering was done by my friend Kouen. I hope you like it.
