Francis "Fermat's Last Theorem" Gayon Final Fantasy VIII | Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec
Author's Comments

This piece is an etude in A minor. An etude is literally "a study," i.e. an exercise for pianists, and, as such, requires a large amount of technical skill to play. Despite being just an exercise, I tried not to focus on just the difficulty. I've heard a few etudes that are indeed very technical, but they are not very pleasing to the ears. I tried to emulate Chopin's style in making his etudes—technically demanding without sacrificing beauty.

I used Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec as the main subject of this piece, but I'm sure most of you who are familiar with the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack will recognize a fragment from the Ending Theme—the segment based on Liberi Fatali. I just thought it fit quite nicely with my main theme so I dumped it in there as well.

Composed using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen with GPO samples using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

Welcome, one and all, to yet another update of Sound Test! This past couple of weeks has been hectic. I expected no less from pediatrics; it is one of our "Big Four" rotations (the others being internal medicine, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology). And dealing with bratty kids and their overbearing moms and grandmas can be more draining than the academic part.

Last week, I had announced that the search for a new Resident Remixer would commence soon. Well, I have everything prepared already. All that's needed is Castomel's approval (he does deal with the hiring, after all) and the gears shall start to turn, so aspiring musicians out there, start warming up!

Now, as for the subject piece of this update, it is a pretty straightforward take on Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec with lots of rapid passages, jumping trills, dynamic changes, and over-an-octave jumps to increase the difficulty of the piece. I wanted to insert a brief lyric segment in the middle of this vigorous piece and decided, just to be different, to use one of the most powerful segments in the original piece. I thought it was effective enough. I particularly liked the way I ended this piece—just two fortissimo A minor chords that evoke the main motif of Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec. I hope you like it! Go ahead and give it a try, folks!

Well, I suppose that's it for this update. Check back every now and then for updates on the search for the new Resident Remixer. Stay safe and have a great weekend!
