2002 Holiday Shopping Guide: PlayStation

The PlayStation has been surpassed by superior hardware, but that didn't prevent a couple of titles to debut this year.

Arc the Lad Collection

Arc the Lad Collection

When North America missed out on the first release of the Arc the Lad series, Working Designs stepped in to bring all three previously unreleased Arc the Lad games to eager North American RPGamers. They also threw in Arc the Lad Arena -- a disk loaded with bonus features -- as well as a Making of Arc the Lad CD. The thick, heavy box also includes other goodies, such as thumb button covers for the Playstation controller. The series follows three different main characters across years of adventure and mystery surrounding an ancient Ark and the terrible evil it holds at bay. Players will experience strategic battles and discover scores of hidden secrets. Arc the Lad Collection is suitable for both newcomers to the series and import fans from "way back."

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete

An RPG with no qualms about being standard, but beautifully standard, in every way. Creator Working Designs takes this old Sega CD game and gives it a full going over, turning it into a sprite based masterpiece. The tale of Dragon Master Dyne has long held Alex, the hero of Lunar, with dreams of far off places and adventure. Alex finds that adventure, along with his childhood friends Luna and Ramus when they manage to awaken the White Dragon, who sets them on their world spanning quest. With a touching love story, anime cutscenes, and a truly epic plot, Lunar:SSSC manages to do what most RPGs can't: create a truly captivating adventure.
