  Tip of the Week

When you mark "YES" when asked if you want to be in Critique Corner, you are forfeiting your chance to be posted in the regular RPGamer updates, because Critique Corner is run on The Art Corner, not RPGamer Fanart. Therefore, those who reply YES to Critique Corner will be contacted at a later date for Critiques, and will not find their work posted here, usually (there are excpetions, but not many). Keep this in mind next time you submit fanart.

Welcome

Hello and Welcome! Whew, I swear I will never look at a turkey again. I am SO stuffed. I think I'm gonna become vegetarian for a while. Anyway! Happy thanksgiving to you all. I know I give thanks for my life, my happiness, and my luck...after all I'm slaving away for you nice people ^_^ Gee, what more can I ask for? Ok ok I'm just kidding. I'm sorry, I'm really sluggish after all that food (Big Turkey + grandparents over for thanksgiving = BIG FAT LORELAI) So without further ado, I will present to you the good wholesome fanart for this week. Memo to me: next week I will revert to weekend updates...

a Random Cookie from Lorelai

I thought you all might enjoy a little surprise guest next week...I decided to let me little sister try her hand at an update. She's a sophomore in high school, which means she's about 15 years old...I think. **sighs** Granted, she knows little HTML, but I'll help her code the page and you guys can listen to her babble in this space up here ^_^ (OW! She's hitting me! Call 911!) And, for the record, she's an RPG fan too. She finished Breath of Fire III and will finish Lunar SCCC before I will....Grrrr...

A Cookie for your Thoughts

  • The Art Corner Progress, progress...Countdown to the final opening! (make sure you have javascript enabled) I decided the site will launch December 14th. See you on opening day!!!

  • Contacting Fan Artists is not as hard as you think. Simply e-mail me with 'attn:(artist's name)' in the subject line. All i have to do is redirect your e-mail to the artist, who will then receive e-mail from YOU, with 'by way of W. Lorelai Wu' in parenthesis after your e-mail. Sorry bout being a nosy middleman...You'll thank me after I save you from the 10-spams-a-day that plagues my Lorelai, Fanart, AND Lifestream e-mail addys...

  • Ask Lore: Like always, I'm opening up my Lifestream e-mail to personal questions, whether it be related to RPGamer, my other jobs, my goals, nigel, my school, or my pet dog Bobby. Anything that's not inappropriate or too private. Go ahead, Ask Lore. ^_^ I usually answer by e-mail nowadays instead of posting my answer on this site, but you can still get to know me!

  • Art on IRC: come to esper.net and join #artcorner, the official channel for The Art Corner! I just registered it, so I welcome you to join. If you're a staffer (aka a critiquer) please be sure to drop by, I need to op you in the channel ^_^;;;

  • A Word on Today's Fanart: A mix of veterans and newcomers! I really do like this new policy...I think it brings more variety to the column, and I hope you agree!!! For some reason there's a concentration on Squall and Miang today. Tanoshii desu!

Wei-Ling Lorelai Wu

Main Cast of Final Fantasy VIII
" Everybody in GFs "
Artwork by Chris Bunag

Comments: I felt like drawing an FFVIII group picture, and well...this is it. I didn't want to do just a usual grouping of the main characters, and decided to GAP-inize them. Their GAP outfits are influenced by their normal outfits, and are also real GAP clothes (I checked the web page and everything ^_^;). Also, in case you don't know, the pale chick with the long black hair's supposed to be Matron Edea. It's hard to really draw her to be instantly recognizable, since she's so plain, and Sorceress Edea was too fancy (with her thick makeup and all) to be GAP-ized. I did it in Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos Drawing tablet.

Squall and Bahamut from Final Fantasy VIII
" Bahamut Summon "
Artwork by Sandara-3

Comments: Bahamut, my favourite GF. ^_^ Done in watercolor, edited in PS5.

Edge and Rydia of Final Fantasy IV
" Stop Looking At Me! "
Artwork by A. Chan

Comments: I did the outline here with the mouse in MSPaint (just regular MSPaint, thank you) and Rydia's clothing was done in Corel Photo Paint 8.0. The original pic was overlapped over a photograph ^_^

Ramza and Delita of Final Fantasy Tactics
"FFT Heroes "
Artwork by Patricio Soler

Comments: I tried to show their friendship and angst for the situations they're placed in. I drew it in mechanical pencil on typing paper, scanned it at 150 resolution, tweeked the contrast & brightness, then saved as a jpg. Simple enough. Of course there's a lot more to it...as usual in art.

Ramsus and Miang of Xenogears
" Lovers "
Artwork by Lea

Comments: For some odd reason, Ramsus was my favorite character in the game, and I hadn't done any fanart of him, nor had I done any real pictures of Miang. I really like this piece because of the expression on Miang's face; for once I mangaged to make her look like she wasn't staring into La-La land ^^;;;, and I hope I pulled off that she looks like she's regretting the way she treats Ramsus.

Krelian of Xenogears
" Bloody Hands "
Artwork by GlassShard

Comments: Krelian was hands down my favourite character from the game, I love how he went from holy man to heartless murderer all in the name of unrequited love. I prefer the older Krelian in his priestish outfit with the blue hair but I hadn't tried drawing the Solaris version so uh, that's what this pic's about. Drawn, scanned, then colored in Photoshop 5.0

Aerith Gainsborough of Final Fantasy VII
" Aerith "
Artwork by Allison Leary

Comments: This was a piece of a character design sketch I made on drafting paper. I really liked the pose and her expression, so I colored it on Paintshop Pro. I was a bit lost for the background, so I just experimented a bit, and ended up with something I was rather pleased with, since I was looking for a bit of a 'simple, yet magical' feeling...

Bart Fatima of Xenogears
" Bart "
Artwork by Wai Chu Yu

Comments: I love doing action pics, and I noticed that Bart didn't seem to have any despite his rather cool deathblows in the game. So here's him doing one, and as always, with a roguish grin on his face.

Tifa of Final Fantasy VII
" Bootless "
Artwork by Tana

Comments: Tifa takes off her boots and kicks back. Hmmm, I had fun with foreshortening. Ever since I starting going to an art college, I've noticed myself paying more attention to certain things, like form and cast shadows, and foreshortening. I've always loved Tifa, and I wanted to try a more difficult pose, so here it is! Not my best work, but cute. Hope everyone enjoys!

Gaza of Legend of Legaia
" Gaza "
Artwork by Rick Groce

Comments: I originally made this for a character in an online game, but afterward I realized it looks a lot like Gaza from Legend of Legaia. Gaza stood out to me in that game as a very unique character, I was interested in his small part of the story as soon as I first saw him. I made the image in Bryce 3d, and I'm pleased with the way it came out. The "aura" coming from him is supposed to represent the casting of a spell.

Miang of Xenogears
" Dark at Heart "
Artwork by Kathy

Comments: This is a pic of Miang from Xenogears. I really like the way the hair came out, but I'm still not quite satisfied with the top...looks too stiff =P. Ummm, I stripped off a lot of her uniform 'cause I feel that drawing skin is so much more fun than drawing clothes =) ! Actually, I'm really proud of the hand, too. It took a lot of work to keep it from looking like a bunch of pink grapes! I got the idea for this from a pic in a magazine that reminded me of Miang. I'm not too sure if the anime/realistic combination in here really looks okay, though. Hmmm....please email me and tell me what you think!

Squall Leonhart of Final Fantasy VIII
"Squall found his Prozac! "
Artwork by Ivy McKnight

Comments: Squall found his Prozac! ^_^

Squall of Final Fantasy VIII
" Ow. "
Artwork by Kyrakat

Comments: When FF8 came out in the US, I refused to join the hype of FF8 fanart. Then I saw Hydrachild's Squall and Cypher "Truck Driver" picture, and I got inspired. (Hey, inspiration comes from the strangest places.) And think about it: If you got a cut on your forehead deep enough to scar, it's gonna hurt. The coloring was done with markers (which are kinda cheesy, 'cause I've only been using them for a few months).

Selphie of Final Fantasy VIII
" Sunny Spirit "
Artwork by Meriko

Comments: I always envision Selphie as upbeat and cheerful, and sunflowers just seem to be "her." Please forgive the strangely fuzzy/milky scan. My computer abruptly died on me, taking with it my banners and the ability to scan. I had to use someone else's scanner instead and surprisingly, this is as sharp as it could scan without losing major components. Boo.
