Hiyas everyone! Sorry for my tardiness on this update; was bound to happen sometime, eh? Well, the reason is this: I was put through Berkeley's Music Department "Baptismal Ceremony" (No slander intended; play Xenogears to understand) which also goes by the name of Advanced Placement Exams. Six strenuous hours, but at least I waived three, possibly four classes! Also, this update would have been a lot later had it not been for the kind, wonderful work of my long-time friend, kindred spirit, idol, and partner...who requests that I refer to him as "Nigel." (That's not his real name; he's just shy.) Thank you so much Nigel! I owe you big. Luv ya ^_^
Now for the awesome art! You artists kept me to a good hour trying to pick twelve out. Just as a side note, PLEASE don't send me e-mails saying things like, "Here's some of my horrible art," or "This piece isn't really good," or "I don't like this one, but oh well..." because (1) it IS good, and (2) You're making me biased, because if you don't like it..well...I'd just rather receive fan art you think is worthy, not table scraps.
Artists, I'm running out of things to say about you, and you deserve a lot more too; so I'd appreciate it if you could, from now on, send comments along with your art. Keep up the medium listings, and the names of the illustrated people, monsters, and otherwise; however, you may wish to discuss why you drew the picture, what inspired you, how you set about drawing it, and such. I'll find a way to include your comments into this page. That way, you won't have to endure my lame and generic comments. I won't try to pretend I know what went about your head when you did your masterpiece; so, now I'd like to give you the microphone. Let's hear some of your comments starting today, ok? Enjoy today's update! And as always, good questions and courteous feedback are welcome.
Sincerely, Lorelai

Portrait Frenzy II: Eyes and Bodies
|
 |
Hello and welcome to Critique Corner! The general gist of things today will encompass the body in general. Matt Elder asked about how to draw more realistically, and both Taarkoth and NeoPhalen wanted to know about drawing eyes. Oh yes, and there's an actual critique below as well, that has...well, nothing to do with the topic here, but it's still a good critique.
About realism (I hate that word) in human bodies...There's nothing more to it than PRACTICE, ANATOMY STUDY, and PRACTICE. Oh, did I mention practice? I've been drawing the human body for twelve years and I not only love it, I'm still not that great at it. Now, rather than posting a picture of a naked model here and getting sued by everyone, I'll simply refer you back to Princess Artemis' great guide to human proportions, at the bottom of my update on January 1st, and also a general figure I whipped up just now. Eyes are sooo fun! After you can do them, of course. People always worry about making two eyes look exactly alike. This is not necessary folks; humans don't HAVE eyes that are mirror images of each other. Eyes are shaped like footballs in general, and also slant in various directions depending on race, build, etc. I'm not sure what eyes the questions specifically pertain to, so I'll address all kinds in my examples. Eyes also change according to the tilt of the head; eyebrows get closer to the eyes when the chin tilts down and the view's from above, and get more crescent-moon shaped when the chin's up and the view's from below. |

The Magic of Photoshop
|

Artist: Patrick S.
Subject: Ultima Weapon
Medium: Adobe Photoshop 4.0
Comment: This was my first time submitting the art. I think I may be a computer artist when I get older. Can you please critique this? Thanks!
Patrick, it's a really great job, honestly. I still don't know heads from tails in Adobe Photoshop (yet); all I can do is color nicely. But still, from my experience, I offer the following: The texture of the sword is very, very nice and detailed, but shading would probably make it more realistic. I'm aware perhaps that wasn't your intent, in which case my comment about the light source (if it were so bright in the background, the sword would be darker and have some sort of light halo around it) would be invalid too. Otherwise, you're really at the liberty to do anything you wish. Perhaps instead you should draw/render your own Cloud, instead of using Square's rendition of him! I know I'd be interested in seeing that picture.
