Art and Lore: Critique Corner (May 20th, 1999)
|
 |
Hoi! Guess who's DONE WITH FINALS! *grin* So that means I can put that much more time into RPGamer, ne?
Hrm. Hrm hrm. I can't think of a witty intro. And Thor isn't here for me to bug. Oh, but I can rant about E3, whoohoo! (Lorelai looks down and notices she is wearing her new Harvest Moon 64 T-shirt) E3 was fantastic, except for the fact that a certain person who will remain nameless helped me finish disc 1 of Final Fantasy VIII...(AAAAGH! SPOILER! MY EYES, MY EYES!! DAAAAARN YOU!)
Other than that, I'll be appearing in #rpgamer and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions about E3 that are in my meager knowledge and verbal capabilities. Look for the nick that is always spouting elementary japanese and shouting "Hoi!" ^_^;;;
So what's in this update, you ask? Well, it is mainly a long-overdue critique corner. ^_^ So everyone, get ready for Some Critique Corner, and some of Lorelai's ego a very hyper Lorelai! (PS: Like my Raistlin sig? Dragonlance rules...I think i'll start a sig archive. Lesee, I have Billy, Haruka, and now Raist...who's next? Suggestions anyone?

Planet Protector
Final Fantasy VII Art by Nadia
Heya Nadia, nice to see you again ^_^ Anyway, I really like this Aeris picture, but it sounded to me like you were really concerned with your CG skills. Relax man, if there's anything you should be concerned about, I'd focus on the actual artwork first. Your CGing work is fine! Why don't you take a break from that and hit those anatomy / figure drawing books? I'm sure Aeris would love you for it! |
Watch over Me
Xenogears Art by Calis Cheah
Heya Calis! Hey! I want in on you and Amber's spiffy Xenogears webpage! =P Anyway, Citan looks like a studmuffin and those wings are terrific. I can only suggest work on proportion and details to accuracy, and maybe some more strength in color. You put tremendous effort into emotion (remember when I went nuts over your Fei picture?) and if that could be matched up with accuracy to proportions and facial details, you'd really be on a roll. Of course keep in mind I wouldn't want to change your personal style...so it's up to you. ^_^ |

Partial Cast
Final Fantasy VI Art by Matak
Woa baby. I could take a lesson or two from you regarding CGing. ^_^ Great SD skills, boldness in color...now maybe we should animate these people. I mean, it's boring to just stand around, I'm sure Terra, Sabin and Locke want to do something! And with skills like yours, I see no problem...You've got a good grasp on rendering limbs, bodies and faces. Go for it! |
When Jesse Met Elly
Xenogears Art by Zachary
I went through your earlier artworks, Zach, and let me tell you this: You've come a LONG way. I especially love to see improvement in artists, and When I compare Jesse and Elly to the Black mage with a lot of "Pop on his heater" (WHATEVER...^_^) I can tell you've really improved. Now, I think it'd be best for you to concentrate on faces. Elly and Jesse are lifelike and the verisimilitude to the game are good, but their expressions seem a wee bit melodramatic. Mainly because their eyes don't seem to focus. (Well, that's GOOD in Elly's case) Also work on clothing folds, I can see that shortcuts were taken in Jesse's longcoat. Otherwise...improvement is in your genes! |

Dragoon Kain
Final Fantasy IV Art by Mike
All right, someone drew Kain!!! The guy rocks in FF2/4j. Right away let me tell you, there's no need to concentrate on doing every scale in his armor; without proper shading, it will only make a suit of metal look...odd. Also, Kain's body is in movement, there's no way each limb would be so prominent. An arm should be hidden behind his body, or a leg more foreshortened. These will help him seem more in action; he seems very static right now due to his body being in a straight line, and his chest facing 100% front. Other topics to heed: shading, proportions, and background. |
Lily of Itory Village
Illusion of Gaia Art by Olivia Wright
Aw, what a nice setup! I really like your choice of pose and scenery. You might want to think about studying the human body in motion, however, because there are some general foreshortening and joint technicalities that are slightly wrong. Also think about this: if Lily's out in a nature scene, her clothes and hair wouldn't be so flat and tame. Spice it up with some wind! Remember to keep the figure prominent, though, and don't let her blend into the background. |

Cooperation
Final Fantasy Tactics Art by Lysander
I was laughing at this one for quite a long while; It reminded me of these crazy obstacle courses I used to draw for a line of bunny rabbits (erm...yeah.) Excellent control over your SD characters, Lysander, as well as awesome shading and creative layout. In fact, there isn't much for me to critique at all! Oh, but do be careful with bodies; they're not as rubbery as you think. You might want to pay attention to where joints actually bend, and where they don't. Also, your style is a mix between SD and normal; if you meant to pick one, work on being more obvious in style. |
Burn Everything!
Final Fantasy VI Art by Susan AKA Celes-Dawn
First off, did you mean to save this file in GIF format? I think you lost a lot of color and detail because of that. ^_^ Try JPG next time. Shrinks the size and does colors better too. Other than that, Terra could use a little wind to fluff up her nice long dress. You might consider making the "Burn Everything!" caption less cute and give the picture a much more dramatic feel. Also, you might want to put more spikes into the fire, and make it more wild and erratic. Those are the tamest flames I've ever seen ^_^ |

A Child's Journey
Lufia II Art by Chibinina
Wow, those are really interesting eyes; the darkness of them reminds me of Sailor Uranus when she "dies" in Episode 111. In case that's not the effect you hoped for, consider putting some black and white into her eyes for the pupil and some reflections, respectively. It will her more life. Also, I see some good work in CG, but you might want to stick to colored pencils or some solid medium for now as you work on your shading skills. CG makes everything soft if you don't have the right know-how and tools...and that's not always good. |
Hope you enjoyed today's Critique Corner! I'll be back this weekend for a regular update...and the continuation of my lovely IRC script, BILLY VS HARUKA! my mailbox is ABSOLUTELY STUFFED with some awesome art for you to feast your eyes upon. Ja ne!!!
