Fire Level

Welcome back dear Fan Art readers! This week we have two regular submissions to go through, one from Boum and one from Deadfishie, which she had sent me several months ago. Back then I preferred not looking at it since I hadn't finished Final Fantasy XIII and it was a possible spoiler according to the artist. I've finished it last week so now there's nothing to worry. Looking at the picture today, though, I don't think it's much of a spoiler after all. But let's jump in and have a closer look!

We haven't seen a lot of Breath of Fire fanart in a long time here, so Boum's latest submission is quite welcomed. Unlike her last piece, this one has no background, but focuses more on each character. I like the high contrast the light creates when it hits the characters and their equipment. The drawing itself is nicely done, and the two colored shapes help complement the composition and support the characters in an otherwise rather empty canvas.

Deadfishie has sent several other submissions since this one, but better late than never. This is an interesting interpretation of Ragnarok from Final Fantasy XIII. The tight framing gives us some great negative space all around the character, and while the background is simply a dark, black mass, it also serves in contrasting with the lighter parts that are, as the writer says, supposed to be glowing. Special effects can be hard to achieve, but Deadfishie is getting there with the glowing yellow parts. I think having shadows here and there, a slightly darker skin and some reflection could also help. Using pure white can also help with really shiny surfaces.

This week in the comics we understand why Locke is running way and counting down frantically. I think this is very interesting for a way to introduce this scenario. I personally always imagined this scene at night or very early morning, but it still promises to be fun. I also got to have the best chapter thumbnail of the series so far, and I'm quite happy with that.

I hope you've enjoyed this week's edition of Fan Art, and of course remember to send in your art at fanart@rpgamer.com with a tag such as [SUBMISSION] at the beginning of your title. Drawings, sculptures, paintings, animations, costumes, even scribbled sketches are fine! Meanwhile, make sure to leave a comment for the artists in the forum post! Have a nice week!
