Sometimes game impressions don't exactly do justice to the final product, because what you're trying isn't really the final product due to time constraints. Things may go go either way with the title, and this is an important point to remember with Infinite Space by Sega. While still in development, the game shows promise as a title with an interesting plot, but lacking (or not yet finished with) gameplay.

"RPGs have more than their fair share of high fantasy-based worlds, something out of the ordinary is more than welcome...Infinite Space is a prime candidate to fill this gap."

Almost all of the demo's gameplay consisted of spaceship battles, which is appropriate given the space opera setting. Each ship has an energy meter which can be charged to enable light, medium, or heavy attacks. The ships can move either towards or away from their target in order to improve their chances of scoring a hit or dodging an enemy attack. There were other options seen in the status menu, but they were not available during the demo. One thing sadly lacking was the graphics. Recent DS titles have shown some remarkable artwork in both 2D and 3D environments, but the sprite-based models pale in comparison to other efforts on the console. They aren't the worst by any stretch, but not the greatest either.

In the end, this is a game that needs a more complete copy for a better judgement. While RPGs have more than their fair share of high fantasy-based worlds, something out of the ordinary is more than welcome, and Infinite Space is a prime candidate to fill this gap. Whether it can live up to those expectations remains to be seen, but given that the game won't be released until 2009 in both Japan and North America, we still have some time to see if those expectations can be met.
