Likely one of Square Enix's best showing for me at the show was the upcoming Unlimited SaGa. The game is an incredible piece of software, and it is set to revolutionize the industry, maybe.
The game starts with an amazing cinema scene. What looks to be a 2-dimensional piece of artwork folds out to be a complete cell-shaded 3D FMV. The graphics are truly "neither 3D nor 2D," they're a mixture of the two. Battle graphics are also impressive, and they are very reminiscent of previous SaGa battle engines.
Enough about graphics, let's get on to the gameplay. You start the game by choosing from a list of 7 characters. Each of these characters are backed by an entire game, with each one lasting 40-50 hours, according to the representative from Square Enix. Beating the game with one character is good enough to be considered having beaten it, but to truly finish the game, you've got to put in your 200-250 hours.
The story is presented in a cinema-like fashion, with chacarter occasionally using voice-overs. It is pretty much all presented in still-screens, with the occasional FMV. The best part about this is that the characters could be represented without having to worry about graphically unimpressive sprites or blocky polygonal characters.
You'll have to get used to the battle system and field-exploration if you plan on getting this game. The battles utlize a slot reel system which determines the success of your characters' actions. You could use one character for an entire turn if you wanted to, or you could split up the turns equally between the characters. HP and LP (Life Points) are equally important in this game. You can successfully eliminate an otherwise heavy HP enemy by simply using an attack that is adept at decreasing LP.
Dungeon and field exploration is done entirely on a board game-type system. You can use the analogue stick to move from one area to the next, and each move could result in treasure, monsters or traps. If you hit a trap, you have to successfully hit the slot reel for it not to damage you.
I'm personally looking forward to this game, and I would encourage anyone and everyone who calls themselves a "hardcore" RPGamer (as the representative described the type of gamers who would play the game) to pick up Unlimited SaGa when it's released next month.
