Demons and cowboys fighting for control of holy sites to prevent, or start, the
destruction of the world by a fallen angel? Sounds like a pretty good premise
for an MMORPG to me! In Priest, which is based off a manga series of the same
name, you can either team up with the Heretics, Lovecraftian-style demons, or
Templars, gunslingers who have banded together under the disgraced priest Ivan
Issacs to protect the world from the demonic Heretics, and their leader, the
fallen archangel Temozarela. Choosing sides is a big part of the game, since
there's an all out war going on at all times between the factions, and the
powers each group can have are vastly different. In the demo I saw, a Heretic
slaughtered a bear and proceeded to eat it raw to regain health. I'm fairly
certain the good guy Templars can't do that, though it'd be pretty amusing
if they could.
The game's graphics are fairly standard for an MMORPG, though the
character models are so unique that they actually drew me to the booth. From
what I've seen of Priest, it looks like it might just have a chance to cause a
stir in the MMORPG market, but only if the game gets more enemies. The demo I
saw had only bears, at least 20 of the lumbering brutes, wandering around the
map. Maybe it's just me, but I never pictured the Wild West as being a bear
covered wasteland, so hopefully it was just for the demo.
