From Software has a potential sleeper hit on their hands in Otogi: Myth of Demons. Of all the RPGs I played
on Day 1, it was absolutely the most unique. Not for it's battling system, which looks to be
the standard action with RPG elements motif, but for it's setting in ancient Japan, and it's
use of Japanese folklore.
The demo starts you out with the character Raikou, an undead warrior sent to purify a
village of evil spirits. After equipping a weapon and choosing a magic spell to use, I was
immediately dispatched into battle. Combat was easy to figure out, with a quick attack,
strong attack, and magic casting selection available in real time. After obtaining 3 goblets
I engaged in a fight against a boss, whom after "purifying" the demo reaches its concusion.
Looking at this game by merely its battles, one might mistake Otogi for your run of the mill
action game.
Not much more information is available as far as plot is concerned, or how an RPG-style
experience system of sorts will be implemented. I enjoyed what I played, but I do have
concerns as to whether each level will have similar rudimentary goals, or if plot will be
interwoven into them. With only 15+ hours of gameplay promised, it seems there might be a
skimping on plot. Setting Otogi: Myth of Demons in ancient Japan did pique my curiosity though, and it
will be interesting nonetheless to see where this title heads.
