Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits Impression
After the 2002 release of Arc the Lad Collection by Working Designs, news about an in-house Sony publication of the series' fourth installment, Twilight of Spirits, has been an invaluable commodity. With the relative North American obscurity of the title I got rather an extended period of time to demo the title.

For the most part the game's plot appears to take place in the remote future of the previous trilogy, likely in the same world. The elemental spirits have again been weakened and the power sealing the ark has wained yet again.

In terms of gameplay, the square movement fields of series' past have gone by the wayside and the battlefields are likewise of multiple shapes, sizes, and heights. Combat is still extremely menu based and although the tactical advantages of getting above or behind an opponent are still effectual, the prevalence of special abilities and magic might outweigh its usefulness. The graphics are far from the shine and polish of Square Enix's titles, but they are vastly superior to the game's direct predecessor in the Arc saga. The English voiceovers are fairly decent as far as they go, but there appears to be no way to view the game in subtitles with the original Japanese voices as of yet.

Although the game looks to be decent enough, speculating the appeal of such a title outside of Japan is a diffucult task. Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits looks to be a great episode in the series so keep your eyes peeled for our continuing coverage.
