This editorial is in defense of the wrongfully scorned Legend of Mana, which had been blasphemously stricken with bad review score after bad review score. This, editorial is being written to hopefully help some of you see that this game is not as rotten as it has been made out to be. First, let us get 2 things straight. We are talking about Legend of Mana not secret of Mana. I more than most even have a deep love for and fond memories of the immortalized classic, however this was a new and IMHO groundbreaking game. Since when is innovation to looked down upon? Legend of Mana was not meant to be the earth-shattering epic its predecessor was. This game was one that was focused enough to make you care about the characters. Such thoughts as, "who is pearl", "I wish Mark would pay attention to Jennifer!" or "No, not Esmerelda!" Are sure to cross your mind. If you take the time to get into the events, which, for the most part form solid story arcs that are very entertaining. While we are on the subject of plot and storyline, LOM has been accused of being void of a "centralized plot." Wrong! LOM does indeed, have a centralized plot, which is revealed subtly, mentioned in passing, and increasingly more as the events progress. Little by little the reasons behind what is plaguing this world are revealed. Your character largely plays the role of an outside observer, pitching in, helping those who normally would be considered insignificant achieve their goals. This makes Legend of Mana a truly unique experience, one that you can share with someone else via a second playstation control, which brings me to my next point. LOMās gameplay is often picked on because there is no definite world or field set out for you to explore. This is because as you complete events you are rewarded with artifacts which are in essence new locations. They can be placed almost anywhere on the map that you wish! With the placement, the world gets larger and larger granting you access to more hours of fun. Also, square implemented some very nice distracters for the occasional boredom you may feel in your travels. I will detail each: Letās begin with the monster corral. Trekking through the locations, you may find yourself crossing paths with an obscure walking egg, well you will have to opportunity to catch this egg, send it to your barn where it will hatch. Then, you can feed it, pet it, and let it graze. Also, monsters serve as party members aside from the main character and NPC. Second we have weapon forging and musical instrument creation. You will eventually run into everybodyās favorite blacksmith, Watts, who will teach you the useful skill of blacksmithing, and with the aid of raw materials you will constantly find, making your own weapons is a cinch. Magic is cast through the playing of musical instruments that summon the elementals in battle. A workshop for creation of said instruments will be built for you. You must first find elemental coins, by entertaining wild elementals that hide in dungeons. With this coins and raw materials, instruments are created allowing you to use magic! There is also golem creation, you can design and paint your own golems with produce from the ancient tree in your backyard! As far as the tree, once it is awakened, you can feed him seeds that will grow into the most exotic collection of fruits and veggies ever! If all the above diversions didnāt entice your oh so sensitive gaming palette, fear not! The visuals in LOM are stunning. Every background and animation taken care of in colorful hand painting, even better quality than Saga Frontier 2. The character designs are very inspired and unique as well. From Flroina to Escad each character makes you want to say, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." If youāre a musical person, Legend of Mana is quite the gem. From the jovial Domina theme to the somber, dark and fitting theme of Lumina to the relaxing Madora Beach theme, the songs will get stuck in your head after repeated visits, and most perfectly fit the mood of the visuals and situations encountered therein. Well friends, I hope Iāve give n you more than the long and short of things, the question is: Are you really ready for another dream tale? If so, go to Blockbuster, or but it used, hell, pawn something to get your mitts on this game. |
