by Xeros89 I write this editorial right after reading Gin'Irochi's editorial "PSX is better! No, Dreamcast is! Dolphin owns".First, I would like to tell you that I am a Sony fan, and that I will probably buy a PS2, although I won't buy it the day it comes out. I won't because of the price, the fact that the PSX will last for at least a couple more months, and because of the lack of game. The reason I'm buying a PS2 is simple- Sony won my heart! In my opinion, the PSX is the best videogame console ever created. It has great games, it's efficient, and it's giving me hours and hours of fun! And why aren't I getting a Dreamcast? For the same reason I'm not ordering a PS2- it has no games! You see, Sega fans always bring back this argument, the "abondance" of Dreamcast games, when defending the Dreamcast against the numerous assaults of PS2 fans. But I ask you: "what games"? Granted, Grandia2 looks nice, and so does Phantasy Star Online. But giving those games as a good reason to buy a Dreamcast is no better than saying that the PS2 will have great games (because it will), but only 6 to 12 months after its debut. Do you remember the first Dreamcast games? Sonic adventure, Ready 2 Rumble, NFL 2000, and a bunch of other games which I call "fill-in" games. What do we really want? RPGs! And are there good RPGs for the Dreamcast? No, there aren't. Evolution is a boring dungeon crawling game, and EGG is weak and annoying. I'm almost sure most Dreamcast owners don't even have EGG or Time Stalkers, because they know they aren't any good. Okay, the Dreamcast has nice graphics, it really does. But those of you who bought a Dreamcast the minute it came out are exactly like those who will buy a PS2 right away. Like I said, I will probably buy a PS2, but I could change my mind. Back in the SNES days, it was Nintendo who won my heart. But then, they broke it by making one of the worst excuses for a console: the N64.When the N64 came out along with the PSX, I would either get a N64 with Zelda64, or a PSX with FF7. I finally went with the PSX, and what a good choice I made, because Zelda64 only came out 2 years later! It may look like I'm contradicting myself, but I'm only showing the facts. What if Grandia2 only comes out in late 2001? What if Shen Mue gets delayed again and again? That's right, you'll be stuck playing Resident Evil and Sports games on your worthless-for-the-time-being Dreamcast. And then, what about the people saying that it's easy to develop games for the Dreamcast while it's supposedly a pain in the neck to develop for the PS2? I say to you all, what gives? Are you on a development team, or are you a gamer? Even if it's harder to develop for the PS2, we can already see that most good companies such as Enix, Square, and Working Designs are already allying with Sony, simply because they know they'll get their sales. They'll just have to be working harder, that's all. We shouldn't care about that, and personally, I think there are to many RPGs on the PSX. I don't have time to play them all! But I'm not whining, because I prefer a little more choice. I guess I could say that in the end, our major problem is that we're compulsive buyer. We want everything right away. We should really look for what's best before making a definite choice. My advice is stick with your good old PSX for another whole year, or simply buy every console. But all and all, we should appreciate the wonders of videogames. Thank you for sticking with me until the end. |
