Rebuttal to Rebuttal to "PSX Is better! No, Dreamcast is! Dolphin owns!"

by Jeff Hagadorn

I would like to rebut the rebuttal of my previous editorial, "PSX Is better! No, Dreamcast is! Dolphin owns!" Apparently, Xeros89, you entirely missed the point of my editorial. The point that gaming is about the games period, not how many there are, or how many RPG's there are for the system. I highly doubt every PSX owner plays RPG's regularly. Many, yes. All, no. By the way, no RPG's for Dreamcast? What do you call Time Stalkers, EGG, Eternal Arcadia, Evenstar, Grandia II, Phantasy Star Online, Legend of SouSou, and the list goes on? Oh, I suppose those don't count now do they. Oh yes, mr. big shot... what about Lunar 3? Supposedly, that's coming out for Dreamcast as well. So what were you saying about Working Designs being loyal to Sony?

Regardless of these facts, my previous editorial was NOT to defend the Dreamcast - it was to get closed minded gamers to wake up and realize there are other consoles out there. Have I now made it clear? I sure hope so. On top of this, you blatantly contradict yourself, then try to cover your ass:

"First, I would like to tell you that I am a Sony fan, and that I will probably buy a PS2, although I won't buy it the day it comes out. I won't because of the price, the fact that the PSX will last for at least a couple more months, and because of the lack of game. " -- Direct quote from your rebuttal

"Granted, Grandia2 looks nice, and so does Phantasy Star Online. But giving those games as a good reason to buy a Dreamcast is no better than saying that the PS2 will have great games (because it will) but only 6 to 12 months after its debut" -- another direct quote.

Let me ask you this - do you remember what the first games for PSX were? Garbage like Road Rash 3, Kileak: The Blood, Cybersled.... Utter CRAP. The psx did have some gems at launh, and so did the Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure was great. Marvel vs Capcom too. If I recall correctly, the PSX had 2 RPG's before Final Fantasy 7 (The game that made the Playstation) Wild ARMs and Suikoden. Two titles that were fun, but mediocre compared to today's standards. So what were you saying about other systems not having RPG's...?

Also, if you really did read my editorial for all it had to say, you would have seen me state that I own a Playstation too, and I'm very happy with it. In fact, I recently picked up Legend of Mana, and I've been having a blast with it. So let me ask you this - PS2 is actually in a worse situation than the Dreamcast was, due to all the errors in it's manufacture, and the HORRID launch. Yet you still say that PS2 will come out on top? Where's the logic in that, my friend? By the end of 1999, the Dreamcast had over 70 counted titles already released. (Source: Sega.com's news archives) Most PS2 games wont be out until 2001.

On the topic of Time Stalkers - I know 2 RPGamer staff members other than myself who have it. Anna Marie Whitehead I know for sure, and I think Dan Calderman. I for one, thought it was a good game. Sure, at first I complained about the lack of RPG's for the dreamcast. Yet, I now own several games for it. (Approaching 13, I belive) While these games are not RPG's, they do have a lot of worth to them. Marvel vs. Capcom has eaten many hours of my time, as will MvC2 when I get it. Oh, by the way - that''s Dreamcast exclusive. Sorry pal. ;)

"...you'll be stuck playing Resident Evil and Sports games on your worthless-for-the-time-being Dreamcast."

Well.. Let me ask all the rest of the DC owners out there. Is Resident Evil: Code Veronica worthless? I don't think so. I happen to own a copy. Gee, looks to me like Capcom somewhat favors Sega's little off-white wonder, doesn't it?

"It may look like I'm contradicting myself, but I'm only showing the facts."

No, my friend. You're presenting the facts as you wish to - from the viewpoint of a biased Sony fanboy. I've already brought up enough facts to prove many of yours inaccurate, havn't I? And let me stop and say this a third time - I own a PSX and I'm very happy with it. But I also own a Dreamcast, which I love just as much as my PSX.

"What do we really want? RPGs! "

"We shouldn't care about that, and personally, I think there are to many RPGs on the PSX. "

"We should really look for what's best before making a definite choice. "

Ok, will you make up your @#$^# mind?? One minute, you're saying that PS2 will be the best console - yet you havn't seen anything from it. No hard evidence at all... You bring up the point of delays, and also how difficult it is to develop for PS2. Well, let me ask this - wouldn't it seem that harder to develop for would equal more delays? Seems like it to me. On top of that, remember Sega's last machine, the Saturn? I do, I used to love that machine. But if you recall, the Saturn's mistakes were that it was hard to develop for, and Sega played favorites with it's outputters. Hmm... that sounds awfully familiar.... Oh wait!

"And then, what about the people saying that it's easy to develop games for the Dreamcast while it's supposedly a pain in the neck to develop for the PS2? "

Me back when PSX came out-
Hmmm.... easy to develop on the PSX with it's C programming support... or hard to develop on Saturn with it's own language, and it's hellah expensive to boot? Looks like I know where my money's going!

Me now -
Hmmm.... easy to develop on the Dreamcast with Windows CE support... or hard to develop on PS2 with it's own, never before released processor and it's hellah expensive to boot? Looks like I know where my money's going!

If you havn't gotten it yet, my point is this - you all say the Saturn sucked, but had some great titles. Well, it looks to me like Sony is making the same mistakes down to the letter that Sega made originally. Interesting, isn't it? Don't get me wrong, due to certain titles, I will likely buy a PS2, but the sheer abundance of inaccuracies and falicies in the logic that a certain console is better than another simply astounds me. they ALL have great games, they will all CONTINUE to have great games.

"My advice is stick with your good old PSX for another whole year, or simply buy every console. But all and all, we should appreciate the wonders of videogames. "

Hmm... that doesn't sound like what you've been saying your whole editorial. Sounds to me like all you've been saying is that everything Sega is worthless, and everything Sony is golden. Well... let me leave you with this final and closing thought - Croc. Get my point? ;) If not, then I'll say it loud and clear. Croc was just as it implied - a crock. See? Every system has bad games, and every system has good ones. I rest my case.
