Why do they want to split us?

by Cesar Sainz de Vicu–a Alonso

I could be considered a new school RPGgamer. I have only played FF8, LoD and Vagrant Story. And I support the new school RPGgamers. I found that the people who have played RPGs for a long time think they have the right to say that the people who have been introduced to the genre with FFVII or any modern RPG donât know nothing of how RPGs were when they played(how fantastic they were), and that new gamers donât now really what are RPGs.

You know what? I download an emulator and a few SNES games (Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Tales of Phantasia) and you donât know until what point they suck. Terranigma has no plot, is all action; it could be said that if it didnât had Hit Points and some magic, it will be an adventure, and not a RPG. Chrono Trigger is very boring. I donât even know how the battle system works. Its like Pokemon; All the time pressing Attack, occasionaly pressing Item to restore part of your health. I have only played the introduction of FFVI and Iâm already bored; all the time casting magic. I find this games introduce you to battles too early in the game. How can the old school gamers say that in old RPGS the plot is sacrificed to have a better gameplay? I prefer LoD Addition System that all the time pressing Attack.

You donât normally hear your parents or any other adult say, ă They donât make good movies anymoreä or ăThere would never be anything like The Beatlesä. I, as probably many of us, contradict their opinions. The movies and the music of our time are also very good. Old school gamers also believe that what they played in the past is the best, and that everybody should like it. Maybe they are too old already for understanding 3D graphics and the introduction of good plots in RPGs, as our parents find much less interesting the new movies and music. Many will say that nowadays that RPGs are nowadays superproductions which only maked to be successful in the market. I donât find this true. If the RPG industry has grown, it has been for its own good. Now we can find much more RPGs; we can choose between them. Three years ago, if you liked RPGs, nearly your only possibility was FFVII. DO you have to buy FFIX nowadays if you want to have a good RPG experience? No. You can choose between LoD, Persona, Valkyrie Profile, Grandia, CC, etc.

To conclude, I think Old school Rpgs started the fight. I would have respected their opinions if they had respected mine. I think this people want the RPGworld to get divided as the music or movie world. Gamers of RPGs are already divided from the rest of the gamers; we are more intelligent because we donât only buy a game for playing, we buy it to feel, to form part of a wonderful story. RPGgamers are joined because all of them like the same thing. But there are no RPGgamers who have the same feelings and response to all RPGs: the response is always subjective.
