by Dan Highwind Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are two of SquareSoft's most successful RPGs to date. Each game encompassing an incredible storyline and characters, along with great graphics and stellar music. Both of these games have achieved a level of excellence that can't be achieved by most other games on their respective system. This editorial is written not to talk about graphics and music, but to talk about how the two storylines of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are connected. Please remember though, these are just my interpretations. The big thing that I want to say right off the bat involves the Masamune's role in Chrono Cross. If you can recall, in Chrono Cross the Masamune is reffered to as a sword that can make one go mad, and the sword that's tainted evil (or something to that effect). When I reached these areas of Chrono Cross, I couldn't help but wonder why the Masamune, the sword that defeated the Mammon Machine in Chrono Trigger, became evil. Then the answer hit me like a ton of bricks! In Chrono Trigger Masa and Mune mention that it's not about who owns the sword, but about how it's used. Thinking upon this I thought that after the events of Chrono Trigger, when Frog was sent back to his own era, that he decided that there was no need to have such a weapon and decided to put it back where it belonged. During the course of the 400 years that separate Serge's era from Frog's someone must have used the sword! for an evil purpose, and therefore the Masamune became a dark sword. It wouldn't be until someone with a good heart used it to defend the Earth that it would revert back to normal. Phew...one theory down. My next raving isn't really a theory, but a reasoning. This is really actually directed to those of you who think that there was little linkage between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. I noticed many different places, and names from the original. Now although you never really get to go to any of these places (except the future Leene Square when you battle Miguel) you still hear tons of information about them. For instance, think about Lavos. You don't hear much about it until you start playing as Lynx. Some of the things people say about it, you would expect to see. Anyway, I'd just like to point that out. As you can see Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are closely linked together. Sometimes you just have to think about this stuff. If anyone has any theories about Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross send them to me, Dan Highwind and I'll look them over! Until next time!
