Parenting in RPGs: Dangerous!
   by Temple Priestess
"If you were to be the parent of a RPG character, then most likely you would end up dead or widowed! It is a common sight in RPGs for the characters to have only one parent present, or none at all. Usually one or both of the parents have died before the start of the game, or actually die during the course of events. This "theme" is seen in many different RPGs: In the Final Fantasy series, most of the characters are parentless or are being raised by one parent."

The State of RPG Music
   by Colin Marlow
"There is a crisis right now in the world of RPG music, and depending on the outcome, it will either regain its towering heights of skill, or will fall, shattering on the diamond-hard floor of mediocrity. I am speaking of course of the new wave of music being used for dramatic purposes in games, especially RPG's, and how it is shifting from the orchestral joy of yore, to the Jpop-like slime of some recent soundtracks (F X being a prime example)."

Did Romancing SaGa 3 have a chance?
   by H. Clower
"Flashback: The year is 1995. Chrono Trigger makes a big splash, and fans all over the internet clamor for more Japanese RPGs to be translated. On top of their lists are three titles: Seiken Densetsu 3, Final Fantasy V, and Romancing SaGa 3. Flashforward: The year is 1998, and it's late springtime. Having finished Final Fantasy Tactics, Square fans turn to another recently-released RPG, by the name of SaGa Frontier- causing an immediate negative reaction among the general gaming community."

Editor's Comments

Welcome to the latest installment of RPGamer's editorials column. Today two readers have graced us with some highly interesting articles. Frequent-submitter and past featured reader Temple Priestess has written a piece on the role of parents in RPGs. Colin Marlow has also presented us with his thoughts on modern RPG music. We've also revived a classic editorial from our archives by H. Clower concerning Romancing SaGa 3, and the SaGa series' success in North America in general.

With Christmas break in full swing, now's the perfect time to write an editorial while you await all your goodies which must remain under the tree for another 9 days. Until next week, thanks for reading!
