A Song from Long Ago December 13, 2006

Editor's Comments: "Back in my day, sonny, we used to walk uphill through the snow both ways to get to the final boss, slay the dragon, and rescue the princess. You kids got it easy!" JuMeSyn explores the idea of older characters as RPG protagonists.

Editor's Comments: A "stream of conciousness" trip through Jason's mind, in which we see the thoughts of a man who has FFXII, but hasn't got the time to play. Who knows what lurks in the hearts of RPGamer staff? Read on to find out.

Editor's Comments: Do we tend to pigeon hole games too much? Terms like RPG, ARPG,and SRPG get tossed about willy-nilly when discussing titles. Is there really a point to all the genre specification? Michael shares his thoughts.

Editor's Words

Hello RPGamers, and welcome to another installment of something I like to call an editorials column. This week's update is inspired (as many of mine tend to be) by music. Driving to work today I was pleasantly shocked by the very first song I heard on the radio on the way in. It was the theme song to the 1984 children's classic movie The Neverending Story. The movie was one of my favorites growing up, which should come as no surprise. A bookish, geeky unpopular kid sucked up into a magical adventure through reading a book? Talk about something I could identify with! So hearing the slightly cheesy lyrics of the 80s pop tune that opened the film really brought a smile to my face. It made the day a lot easier to bear. Music has that ability, that way of changing everything. Sometimes I wonder if what we hear doesn't have a greater emotional impact on us then what we see. Maybe man isn't such a visual animal after all? Who knows? All I know is hearing the right song can bring back memories. Past loves, moments both sad and joyful, and long-forgotten funny moments you thought would stay with you forever (and did, in your heart) can come back upon hearing just a few familiar notes. It's amazing.

Enough ruminating from me though; we've got editorials to talk about! This week, JuMeSyn starts us off with an article on age and RPG protagonists. Is the world ready for a middle-aged Cloud? Jason tells us a little about the trials and tribulations of trying to find the time to play games within a busy life. Finally, Michael walks the tighrope-thin line of RPG genres to discuss how and why we typecast games so much.

So what about you? Have an opinion, thought, or issue with a game or gaming system? Want your voice to be heard? Email me at Editor@RPGamer.com and share your thoughts with the rest of the class! Until then readers, see you next week!
