Remember, Remember November 6, 2006

Editor's Comments: JuMeSyn's always got an interesting game idea for us! This week it's...reality? What if the "rules" of interacting in a real-life society applied in an RPG? How much would the parking fine be for an airship, anyway?

Editor's Comments: Hey, that NPC at the final dungeon will give you an incredible weapon! Or he would, if you saved that puppy 40 hours ago. What, you didn't know about that? Josh hates it when that happens, and lets us know why.

Editor's Comments: Have you ever noticed the trend in RPG character design towards good-looking, Caucasian pretty-boy types? Jason has, and doesn't think it's fair. Is it maybe time for a little more diversity in the RPG workplace?

Editor's Comments: Michael's recently encountered a personal conundrum when playing. Has the number of RPGs lately with completely open-ended progression led gamers to create parties of "jack-of-all-trades" generalists? And is this a good thing?

Editor's Words

Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

Has you ever seen "V for Vendetta"? If not, you really should. It's a movie based off a lesser known but well-loved comic of the same name. In it, a mysterious masked man with a penchant for the dramatic named (oddly enough) V rails against a tyrannical government. Among other talents such as demolitions, marital arts, and general butt-kickery, he also spouts some of the best and most insane impromptu rhyming you'll ever hear. There's a great bit early on involving him and Natalie Portman's character Evey that has to be heard to be believed. I'd love to know how many re-takes it took to get that scene right. I bet the number was astronomical.

Back to the British history bit! And a happy, if somewhat belated, Guy Fawkes day to our friends on the the opposite side of the pond! To those unaware, Guy Fawkes was an anti-establishment type (I hestitate to use the word "terrorist" in this day and age, but it fits) who sought to change British society by blowing up Parliament while both Houses and the King were all in session. He was caught November 5th in the Parliament basement with enough explosives to turn the place into Britain's biggest backyard barbecue ever, and summarily tried and executed. In honor of the his failure, the British every year celebrate with a night of fireworks and hooplah, and set dummies made to look like Guy Fawkes aflame.

So, that's enough of a history lesson for this week. Now, it's time for the eds, and we have four real bangers this week! JuMeSyn puts on his mustachioed mask and shows up with another innovative new game idea. Josh lights a fuse on one "feature" of many recent RPGs that drives us all crazy. Jason touches on the real explosive subject on the lack of certain types of characters in RPGs, and Michael brings it home with an article on getting focused when it comes to character progression in a game.

That's all for this week, RPGamers. See you next Monday!
