The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same
   by Philip Bloom
"It was evolutionary in a way, but the hard drive never truly had a significant chance to revolutionize the console industry... There were several traits that contributed to an environment that ensured it never had a chance, not the least of which being the PC gaming market, the size of the game discs as it stands, and the possible uses of a hard drive in a game in theory."

Where Have All the Warp Spells Gone?
   by Philip Bloom
"The player should be spending his or her time interacting. The challenge provided by playing through to the area is undoubtedly part of the game, but once it's done, we shouldn't force the player to do it again. Who really wants to walk a huge way back? Who wants to fight puny enemies that provide no challenge to go see what's going on ten cities back?"

Capitalism and RPGs: Currency Over Quality
   by psychosis_one
"For many years now, mainstream mass media has served as a medium for lining the pockets of company executives. In Hollywood, the number of no-brain-required blockbuster movies far outweigh the output of quality films; filmmakers are judged on how large an audience a movie can attract, rather than on it’s artistic merit... I think that this process is slowly taking over the RPG industry."

Editor's Comments

Welcome to the latest installment of editorials. This week we have a whopping three editorials for your enjoyment. Philip Bloom (aka Dracos on the boards), one of our most loyal readers and contributors, has submitted two editorials: One, a rebuttal, rounding out his opinion on the Xbox hard drive issue, and another about warp spells and other such conveniences in RPGs. First-time submitter psychosis_one has presented us with an interesting editorial on the evolving face of the modern Square Enix.

Thanks for reading this week. I hope to see some new editorial in my inbox next week!
