Editorials become Perspectives

Perspectives with JD | September 26, 1999

Welcome to my first, of what I hope will be one of many contemporary updates to this section.

On my tenure here at RPGamer Editorials, I digress -- Perspectives -- a number of things will be changing to cater to the ever evolving RPG Community. First and foremost a name change. I assume Why, will be the incredulous sentiment or question on my decision for such a name change.

Simply put the answer is this. As defined by a given dictionary, the word Editorial means An article in a publication expressing the opinion of its editors or publishers. Most are neither, and as far as true editorial opinion, well that simply has not been put to exercise by us editors, at least not yet. I'll further touch up on this at the closing. In any event, the basic premise of such a categorical term for this section seemed quite ludicrous, at least from my vantage point. Therefore I believe a name change would be better suited or at least more applicable. Perspectives -- it's got a nice ring to it, I think. At the very least, it will be the first of many steps on a changing path for this section.

Today's update is a grab bag of opinions, highlighted by the Old School vs New School debate, Final Fantasy 8 and the raging systems war debate. The latter of which isn't quite surprising, especially with the recent releases of the Dreamcast and Final Fantasy 8.

And there goes my first editorials update. Simple, no fuss, no muss. The next few updates however will incorporate several additions that I'm sure you all will be waiting for. What are they? Well...that's top secret for now. You'll just have to tune in next time, won't you? On the next update what o' what shall we discuss? I'm sure you are now all either emboldened to write up a rebuttal of your own or perhaps try creating a new topic of discussion. Let me nudge you all in the right direction....Two topics come to mind. Opinions on the state of the PS2 RPG market. Wait...what market. I seem to recall only two shown in TGS? The other an umbrella topic with some sub topics. What about them Dreamcast RPGs. Shen Mue perhaps? Or what's this? Phantasy Star Online, touted as the square killer? Get of your duff Phantasy Star fans and sound off. Will this juggernaut of a game capture the sprit of Phantasy Star. Will Online gaming work for a Phantasy Star game? Or has Sega sold out, into the money race like Square has? Questions abound...step up to the plate if you've got what it takes.
