Desperately Seeking Bizzaro-World Sam "Nyx" Marchello

Editorial Excerpt:I'm not saying that fantasy plots and settings are bad - far from it! Some of the best RPGs ever produced have used cliché elements of fantasy and science fiction in both plot, structure and setting. However, while the standard fantasy or science fiction plot can be a good thing, I feel as though this is the constant fall back for companies, thus making less room for the more bizarre and innovative game concepts.

All That's Free Sarah Williams

Editorial Excerpt: "It's probably a combination of my nostalgic longing for certain gaming trends/genres that are, or have died out, plus my lack of funds that keeps me from enjoying the head exploding bliss that other gamers are getting from their shiny PS3s and 360s, but lately I've been acquiring a taste for the oft overlooked freeware and flash games sprinkled throughout the net."

From the Editor's Desk

A blight on Kansas. No, not the state, the band. I have had this stupid song stuck in my head for a week, and a half now and it won't go away. I've tried everything. I even listened to that stupid Barbie Girl song; it's annoying but has similar staying power, and I had hoped the two songs might cancel each other out via some sort of stuck song polarity. It's all been to no avail; Kansas remains in my mental jukebox and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast. I've made some progress through my game backlog, though. I have successfully stemmed my over the top buying habits for over a month now. Also, last night I finished Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and have been making steady progress through Final Fantasy Tactics. Only a half dozen games to go after that and then the holiday season will come, and I'll be in the same boat all over again. Sigh, why do so many good games have to exist?

For editorials this week we have a little bit staff and a little fan to enjoy. More pointedly, Sarah Williams shares some musings about her experiences with a few free to play RPGs and Sam "Nyx" Marchello chimes in on the lack of originality in RPG plots. Both are fine pieces, and I hope to see some good discussion on the boards. That said, I must now take the time to reiterate my constant call for editorials. You're all smart people, and I am sure more than a few of you can form some cohesive thoughts to share at length. That being said, enjoy the column folks and we'll have more for you next week.
