Choice(Spoiler Warning) Stew Shearer

Editorial Excerpt: "Sometimes it's nice to have a game where the story is mapped out from the start, where you're just around for the ride and the developers have something already in mind for you all their own. That is, if they do it right. The kind of linear game I enjoy is only good if the people behind it use your lack of choice in an effective way."

Final Fantasy XIV What If Michael Cunningham

Editorial Excerpt: "Everything that you like about the series is there so far. It contains the best that can be offered in terms of production and features a story that appears to be on par with your favorite in the series. Your favorite director and music composer are involved in the project. Everything seems so perfect."

From the Editor's Desk

Season change, time passes by, as the weeks turn into months, turn into years... Bonus points if you can name what episode of South Park I'm referencing. Anyway, yes, summer is drawing to a close, and it's time to return to school. My senior year looms ahead of me and with it promises of literature, essays, and less time for video games. I'll be helping my fiance, already student teaching, move into her townhouse today and shortly after I'll be moving the rest of my junk from her Mom's basement to my dinky dorm room. Ah, the joys of college... Anywho, not much going on for me on the gaming front. I rented and beat Call of Duty 4. The single player was awesome, but much too short. That said, as I am only renting it, I guess it was perfect. I tried the multiplayer, and it is indeed fun, but as with most online shooters I tend to get bored fast. I'll probably pop it once more before I have to bring it back to Blockbuster.

We have some eds from myself and Macstorm this week. I discuss the merits of choice and linearity in video games while Mac talks about an interesting potential for Final Fantasy XIV. If you have to choose one, go with Macstorm's, it's a really nice read and, well, I just felt weird telling you to go read something I wrote. I'm not much for self-promotion. On that note, enjoy this week's column and as always submit folks! We love to hear your opinions!
