The All Important Illusion of Difficulty...
   by Philip Bloom
"...Without actually being hard. Such a conundrum, one might say. Appearing difficult without being hard? Why would that be important at all to having a good game? Games are either 'easy' or they are 'hard'. Perhaps there is some flavor inbetween (depending on who is being asked), but people can clearly tell which is which, right? It's really the actual difficulty of the game that is important!"

Psst...Got a Secret?
   by Philip Bloom
"Secret(noun): 1 a : something kept hidden or unexplained."

Chaos Theory
   by Rhys Rhodes
"Let’s face it – the ‘traditional’ style of RPG battling is on the ropes, and personally I wouldn’t be particularly sad to see it go. On one side you have your guys, while sitting a short distance away in the blue corner is the enemy critters. The battle from that point on simply consists of you attempting to smack seven shades of hell out of the buggers while retaining enough hit points to not collapse in a quivering, boneless heap on the floor. Not only does that lack a certain amount of elegance, it flat out sucks."

The Coming Storm
   by Jamil Ragland
"RPGamers are going to heaven soon. The release of several excellent RPGs in the last few years (Disgaea, La Pucelle, Tales Of Symphonia) is merely a prelude to the slew of heavy hitting games slated to be released over through the end of 2005. There are no less than nine big ticket titles scheduled to hit American retailers (most of which have already been released in Japan)."

Editor's Comments

Today RPGamer's editorials section celebrates its seventh birthday. The column has come a long way in the past seven years, but the spirit of intelligent debate and discussion lives on and has remained generally unchanged since. A big thanks to Andrew Vestal for starting editorials all those years ago, and an even bigger thanks to all the readers and writers who have kept it going for so long.

In a great way to celebrate this momentous anniversary, we received four brand new editorials this week. Philip Bloom (aka Dracos) has submitted two interesting editorials, one on the ongoing subject of late about difficulty; and another thought-provoking discussion about secrets in RPGs. Rhys Rhodes responds to last weeks article about battle systems with a rebuttal. And Jamil Ragland submits an article about the upcoming clash of RPGs in the year 2005.

Here's to another seven years of editorials!
