Religion and Gaming
   by Gabriel Putnam
"Within our modern society, if there is one thing which is nearly unavoidable and ever-present, it is the existence of religion and the belief in a higher power. It transcends all racial, age, and societal boundaries. It speaks to a very human need and desire for an underlying pattern to existence and a purpose to life. Yet, with all of the various ways in which religion interacts and affects people’s lives throughout the globe, one venue which has only slightly been touched, and many times badly at that, is gaming."

Setting as Character
   by AimeeKae
"When a game fails to depict the world as a character worth saving, the “save the world” theme is discredited almost entirely. The so-called epic quest becomes shallow, and without real substance. If you, the game player, don’t know the world well, why bother to save it?"

Caring: To Save a Soul
   by Gabriel Ang
"The RPGamer community was deeply shocked and saddened these recent days with the loss of one of its own. And because of that, I set aside video games for a moment to write about other, more important things."

Game Guides: A Necessary Evil?
   by Temple Priestess
"When I first started gaming, I was playing games like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. They were games that you could pretty much get through without any additional help... Now, games are much more complicated and harder to get through... I've noticed that there are many games out there that you cannot play well without buying a game guide that usually is published at the same time a game is released. "

Equal Fanservice?
   by Laura Organa Solo
"he frustration ZealPropht expresses is more due to the long-standing character archetype Square and others picked up on: there is always the (mostly) masculine male lead that does some kind of physical fighting of some sort. The "primary female" if I may is always the love interest of the male lead and they are usually White Mage / Summoner hybrids"

Only You Can Help Prevent Stereotypes
   by Mercury
"The biggest problem in this area? Stereotypes. Too often women are portrayed as weak, frail, and mere sex objects. However, if you stop and reflect on the video game industry as a whole (not to mention television and movies), stereotypes go both ways."

Editor's Comments

Welcome one, welcome all, to this week's editorials column! We've got six thought-provoking articles by both veteran and first-time authors. Our very own Gabriel Putnam brings to the table an issue that will likely set this column off like wild fire once again. AimeeKae presents us with a very original editorial about game worlds as characters. Gabriel Ang discusses an event that likely touched all of us last week with a tribute to Tony Green. Temple Priestess gives her thoughts game guides, and Laura Organa Solo and Mecury present us with follow-ups from some of last week's articles.

Just as a note to all those who love discussing editorials in the message boards, you also have the option of talking and debating in live chat. Everyone should come visit our IRC editorials channel; you can find out more about it here.

Finally, I'd like to dedicate this update to Tony Green. Unfortunately, I was out of town when we set up the staff memorial for him, so I'll share my thoughts here instead. Tony and I shared quite a few similar interests, namely writing FAQs and walkthroughs for obscure Japanese games. When I talked to him, he could always make me laugh; he was just a likable guy, no wonder he left behind so many friends. I appreciate everything that he's done for RPGamer and the Internet as a whole. May he live on in our memories always.

“Nothing is interesting if you're not interested.”
-Helen Macinness

What's the most important thing to do before submitting an editorial? Proofread, proofread, proofread! You've just GOT to catch those little annoying errors before they start to hurt the quality of your article.
