On Battle Systems: The Death of Originality Glenn Wilson

Editorial Excerpt:

"Video game genres are segregated based primarily on their gameplay, which generally works well, but the poorly titled genre of role-playing games is where this completely breaks down. Now all genres do an adequate job of allowing the player to role-play as well as, if not better than, most RPGs."

On Overall Scores: A Mean Definition of Average Glenn Wilson

Editorial Excerpt:

"The strangest thing about writing reviews and putting them where the anonymous public can supply its reactions is easily the confusion over how the overall scores work. I read RPGamer for years before I started working here and never found the scoring system confusing."

The Buying Experience Mike Moehnke

Editorial Excerpt:

"Particularly in the case of older games (a matter of great importance to me), finding them in a store is a crapshoot at best and impossible at worst. And yet... for mysterious reasons I cannot quite stop going into game stores altogether."

Dream On Robin Crew

Editorial Excerpt:

"I say to you today, my friends, so even that we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow that I still have a dream. I have a dream that one day our people will rise up and truly say "no one system is innately better than the other." I have a dream that on forums across our illusory cyber world, Xbox loyalists and Playstation Lifers can discuss their choices without constant need to reference the supposed sexual preference of the other."

From the Editor's Desk

I love summer. Hot sun, cold drinks... graduating from university a month late thanks to a very special strike my university had back in the winter. Awesome times, right? Well, I suppose it is exciting. Maybe. Not really. I did get a nice graduation gift though – knitted slippers. While most people would be confused as to why this is a nice gift, it's mostly because I love knitted things. I have a Chain Chomp hat, a kitty hat and a Jayne hat (from Firefly) and they were all made just for me by special people. Knitted objects = made of win.

I have been enjoying my freedom from the shackles of university, though I've read so many books and my gaming backlog is shrinking quite nicely at the moment. Over the weekend I finally completed Suikoden Tierkreis and now you guys will never have to hear me gush about it ever again. I loved it, I think it's a fantastic story, and the main character, as odd as he sounded, really grew on me. I've also been playing Persona 4, Jeanne D'Arc and Rune Factory 2 on and off. Yes, I will finish Rune Factory 2. I recognize it has taken me way longer then it should have... but when you're not enjoying it and you have to review it... it's a painful process.

I have four editorials this week, two from the guy who refuses to quit because he adores me so much, Glenn Wilson! I also have a great piece about the “buying experience” from JuMeSyn, and a revision of Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech prepared by Robin Crew. I hope you guys enjoy these pieces. If you don't, you might make kittens cry... and no one likes to see a kitten cry.

And that's all from me this week. I suppose now I should go demand attention from my harem of males. Or I could just play more of this "special" RPG I have for my own amusement. See you all next week!
