Uncensored Censorship: Translation vs. Localization
by Daniel Orner (Cidolfas)
"What many people don't realize is that there are two parts to taking a Japanese game and making it an American one. The first is just the language, certainly. But the second is crossing cultures. The term used in more recent games is "localization" - in other words, transplanting a product from one place to another. Not just translating the language, but making it so that it fits into the new culture."
The Burning Double-Edged Sword
by Lunar Phoenix
"Imagine making the ‘perfect’ game, the game that you thought up, spent years creating and finally after much pavement beating, found a developer to help make your dream a reality… Testers and video game magazines play through the game and proclaim it a great game for its genre and a must have for any gamer… Three months after the game is finally released to a much-anticipated crowd the game is considered a flop."
Deconstructing Luc: From Friend to Foe
by Gabriel Ang
"If there was one character from the Suikoden series that wasn't given much of a
background, it would have to be Luc. Of course most of the characters in the
series never had much background, but few players would have known the big
impact Luc would have, now that we have played the third game in the series."

Editor's Comments
Well, I'm back from E3, and I feel like I know more about the video game industry than I've ever know in such a short period of time. It was an extremely fun experience, and I would encourage you to get a job in the industry for this event alone! You can check out all my impressions for the RPGs of the show in our E3-2003 coverage page.
Today's update includes three high-quality editorials. Daniel Orner submits another editorial, this week about the truth behind censorship. Gabe Ang returns for a second week in a row with an in-depth analysis of a character from Suikoden, and Lunar Phoenix voices her concern about illegal gaming, a subject that is of the utmost importance in our age of video games.
Cortney will be back next week for her monthly update. See you all in two weeks!

“We don't know a millionth of one percent about anything.”
-Thomas Alva Edison
Have you played a lesser-known RPG? If you have, why not try creating an editorial about this game? There are some games which have been extensively written about, and while all submissions will be considered for posting regardless of which game they cover, the rarities have the best chance of getting their name it lights.
