A Broader Definition
by Matthew Scribner
"It goes like this: "An RPG must have interaction with other characters, either other players or digital NPCs, and this interaction must be both frequent and necessary for the advancement of the game." Therefore, even though many action games have superior character evolution systems, Zelda, or Alundra, or Dual Hearts, are RPGs because they have the player interacting with other characters."

The True Antagonist of Final Fantasy VII
by Tom Bennett
"Who is the real villain in Final Fantasy VII? Most people think it’s Sephiroth, since he’s the person who you see and fight throughout the game. On the surface, without analyzing the plot too much, this would appear to be correct. However, after looking into the events of the story more closely, many people have come to believe that JENOVA is the true antagonist."

Battling the Double Standard
by Cortney Stone
"One would think that in our supposedly enlightened modern world, gender inequality would be a thing of the past. Unfortunately, while women have attained legal and political equality, there is still the problem of social inequality. This editorial is about how some are still clinging to archaic notions about gender, and as seen in Rumikoholic's editorial 'The Ever-Annoying Player Character Death.'"

Themes in Final Fantasy 7 and 8
by Ben Ford
"Trying to save a world teetering on the brink of utter obliteration? Take some tips from the seasoned veterans of Final Fantasy 7 or Final Fantasy 8, who have been there and done that all before. But make sure to keep your stories straight; you might run across some conflicting information as they recount their heroic exploits. While Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8 both serve up epic tales of grandeur, the styles through which the tales are told differ greatly."

The Power of Knowledge
by J. dela Paz
"I would like to applaud Wisdom's editorial on the truth behind Cloud Strife's character, which I generally found compelling, cohesive, and in so far as it draws upon actual plot content within the game, quite enlightening - though I admit, after replaying the game only twice, I'm still rather foggy about some of the details he raised."
· Rebuttal to: The Strife Manifesto

The JENOVA Reunion
by Max Murphy
"Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about Final Fantasy VII. After reading a few recent editorials, I couldn't resist putting in what I thought. In particular, I plan to discuss the way SOLDIER was run and also JENOVA, which I consider one of the most misunderstood characters in the game."

Editor's Comments

It's that time of the week again. I considered naming this entire update "Warning: FF7 Spoilers Ahead," but I decided to instead once again use a song title. There is an abundance of Final Fantasy VII editorials this week. Only two have nothing to do with the game: Matthew Scribner's "A Broader Definition," which daringly tackles the issue of defining certain action games as RPGs, and my own "Battling the Double Standard." If, however, you are in the mood for Final Fantasy VII, your appetite will be indeed satisfied. Wisdom's "The Strife Manifesto" seems to have stirred the minds of our readers, as J. dela Paz has offered a rebuttal, and Max Murphy has offered input and affirmed Wisdom's words. In addition, Tom Bennet has stepped forth with his own perspective on the true antagonist of FF7, while Ben Ford takes the time to carefully weigh the themes of both FF7 and FF8.

Next week, Joseph Witham will be back at the helm of Editorials, but I will return on every fourth Monday of the month to lend a hand. Keep thinking and writing, and send your thoughts Joseph's way.

Dare to do something different. Instead of presenting your personal view of a much-discussed topic, try writing about something that few people have considered, or something that has never been considered at all. By writing about a fresh subject, your voice is more likely to stand out in the silence than to be drowned out by the crowd.
