Role-Playing Sub-Genres
by Joseph Witham
"In 1986, Japanese developer Enix unleashed Dragon Quest on the world. It was an RPG, no doubt, it followed the same experience-gaining, dragons-slaying, dungeon-crawling action that all games who called themselves RPGs followed. Despite all this, we began immediately to see the evolution of Japanese console RPGs as a sub-genre."
Psychology of a traditional RPGamer versus an 'MMO-RPGamer'
by Doug Hill
"Another part of playing MMORPGs is being able to feel like you actually earned something. Any prestige that you have, or any part that you play, even minor, to the storyline, is not something that was meant to be. It happened because you were in the right place at the right time and you delivered. Things that happen in these games are not scripted."
On the Monetary Problems Inherent to MMORPGs and a Potential Solution
by Gabriel Putnam
"They’re the newest fad of the industry and the prize which many fledgling companies have pinned their hopes for success upon. The temptation to most of us is obvious, a persistent game whose players keep forking over their cash, years after its purchase. To developers and investors of any size, this looks like a godsend on the surface. It represents income of 2-3 times greater magnitude than a single player venture..."

Editor's Comments
Welcome back everyone! RPGamer's news department is proud to announce the revival of the classic editorial column, which has gone virtually unnoticed for over a year. We've made it our goal to bring it back to its glory days, where RPGamers everywhere can discuss their opinions in a formal, intelligent manner.
I'm Joseph Witham, and I've been a news reporter for the site since 2001. I will be the managing editor for this column, but occasionally other news staff members will be taking update duties. For the next update, Cortney Stone will be hosting the section. Send all your editorials to her by using the Submit an Article link.
The news department took over this column with the philosophy that we, as the press who follow gaming coverage in-depth, are sort of "in the know." However, we're not the only ones with valid opinions, so please, if any of these editorials have inspired you, or if you have your own ideas for material, submit your opinions where they can be read and analyzed by thousands of role-playing fans!
P.S. You'll notice the slick design used for this column. Thanks goes out to Michael Harnest, better known on the Internet as tuinte, for the awesome design.

"When you cease to make a contribution [to RPGamer's editorial column], you begin to die."
-Eleanor Roosevelt
Creativity goes hand in hand with opinion. Your editorials should reflect your personality and personal interests. There is no limit to what you can write about, as long as it has something to do with RPGs.
