Feature Article: Gamer-Countergamer
Difficulty in RPGs

by J. Matthew Sloderbeck
and Josh Martz

Editor's Comments: What happens when you mix a workaholic newsie and an editorialist? You get Gamer-Countergamer! Gamer-Countergamer is a new monthly feature for editorials, thought up by our very own Matt Sloderbeck and Josh Martz. This month's topic is game difficulty. Matt looks at how games can become unenjoyable when they become too challenging. Game designers should focus more on the content than how difficult they can make the game. On the flip side, Josh argues that difficulty in games can be a breath of fresh air. The satisfaction of finally beating a boss outweighs the frustration of actually getting there.

Editor's Comments: As we get older and busier, our time to play games becomes severely limited. We need a serious draw to keep playing a game or it gets tossed in the backlog of games collecting dust. Michael joins us to discuss what draws him into a game.

Editor's Comments: Slimes are people, too! We must treat them with respect! Oh, nevermind, their main purpose is to keep reproducing so you can keep killing them in one blow. Also, why do those pesky Metal Slimes run away so much?

Editor's Comments: Games aren't only for kids. A lot of negativity has been surrounding video games lately about kids playing violent video games when some of these games weren't intended for them in the first place.

Editor's Comments: Henry returns to share with us what makes up his ideal RPG. He wants a story with a historical undertone. An innovative battle system is also a must. Finally, he needs a decent soundtrack to balance the mix.

Editor's Words

Shaking things up this week...

This week I am treating you to the first of many monthly Gamer-Countergamer editorials. Want to be the first readers to do one? I updated the submission guidelines recently to reflect this new format. Feel free to scout out writing partners in #edscorner while waiting for Eds Hour to start up again in the coming weeks. I'm still looking for suggestions, so don't forget to send me some!

The feature this month, brought to us by Matt and Josh, discusses game difficulty. Instead of just looking at one point of view, two sides are discussed, looking at challenge and content. Michael finds it harder to play games without certain draws and discusses what they are. Josh writes about the social aspects of the slime. Daniel brings us a look at the generation gap that has caused the misconception that games are only for kids. Finally, Henry shares with us his ideal RPG.

Josh is going to be doing the column next week. After his evil plot to take over Q&A, he is going to take a crack at taking over editorials as well. Don't worry, I'll be back in a week or two.
