by TheRooster Warning: This Editorial probably contains spoilers, read it anyway. Iām absolutely sick and tired of whining about spoilers. Every gaming web site, message board, and chatroom nowadays seems to have spoiler warnings or people complaining about having their virgin ears defiled by these spoilers. I think that RPGamers as a whole should just lighten up, and realize not only will spoilers not kill you, but that they are necessary to sell games. Will a game really be completely ruined if you find out the freaking name of the main character's grandmotherās goldfish? Will knowing what currency the game has, or how many worlds you will travel through in the newest Final Fantasy really make the game less enjoyable? Some people seem to think so. If your determined to buy Chrono Cross, then read a couple character bios, will the game cease to be fun because you already know a few things. You could read all the strategy guides, and plot outlines you want. Nothing is like playing the real game. If you think your game has been ruined by spoilers, then the game wasnāt that good, and your just looking to blame somebody. You could know about Aerisā death long before you started playing FFVII and it would still have the same emotion as far as Iām concerned. It would be less shocking but in no way does it taint the event, or change it in any way. Will being told the mechanics of a battle system before using it make the battle system any less complex or different? No, so stop your whining. Most of these people themselves are hypocrites. They tell me to stop spouting spoilers about a game because they havenāt played it yet. Then they go about to talk about the plot of something Iāve never played, and think its OK. If they really cared about spoilers then they wouldnāt talk about games at all...What if somebody didnāt know that Aeris will die and you spouted it out of your hypocritical lips, thinking everyone knows that. (Aerisā death is the perfect spoiler example.) What then ...ooohhh... you have joined our lowly group of people who "spoil" games for others. Is it not your fault for reading spoilers not mine for sending them? Did anyone force you to read whatās on your screen? No. If you really want to be "spoiler-free" then why did you even go to a gaming site/mb/chatroom. If you read a single thing about a game some aspect of it is going to be "spoiled". "Spoilers" are absolutely Necessary to gaming, without them I would have no clue what RPG to get next. If we truly had no spoilers then what would make us go out and get game X. some people that avoid spoilers go out and buy a game not knowing anything about it and then wonder why they purchased it, when it sucked. Is it not because they didnāt look at the information available to them about the game, about its plot and battle system? If they knew about them before they bought the game, they probably wouldnāt of have made the mistake of purchasing it. When people do read the information they can make educated purchases, so they can experience the RPGs with the plots and battle systems that appeal to them.
Since when did we start calling Information "Spoilers" and labeling them as bad. Games
are for everyone and should be discussed openly, you might hear about a game you like,
and learn something new about a game you had never considered before. And if you still
insist that you donāt hear any "spoilers" then you can just refrain from going to spoiler
filled locations on the Internet and elsewhere as far as Iām concerned. Donāt ruin
discussions for the rest of us, just because you want to whine.
