by ATP First of all, for an editorial that claims to be only about the games, it comes down pretty hard on the N64 and the playstation 2. I am not going to take a stance on whether one console is better than another, but I'd like to at least point out that the N64, although it had a serious dearth of good games, the ones that WERE good absolutely ruled. Zelda 64 kept me occupied for hours upon hours. So what if the graphics are dated now? So what if Nintendo and Rare are like the only companies that can make anything worth playing on the N64? It's still worth having. Seriously, Goldeneye was the best frickin' multiplayer game EVER. You can go ahead and argue with me on that, but I've never played a game with my friends for so long with such a high level of excitement. Yeah, there were flaws, problems with muddy textures and horrid frame rates with four players and power weapons, but the game was damn fun. I consider the system money well spent. As for the Playstation 2, I can't really say what that system will do, as it's not out here yet. And yeah, Metal Gear Solid 2 is one of those must-have games, like the first one was. Is this one game worth getting the system for? Hard to say. But there will be better games. Even for the N64, which some people may consider dead. I mean, check out Perfect Dark. Damn, that is a nice game. Yeah, the frame rate is crappy when you add in lots of bots, but hell, just having bots in the first place rules. Personally, I think they cheat, but that may be just me. I might have to turn down their difficulty. But I digress. The Playstation 2 may not have many nice games at launch, but fear not, there will be good games (besides MGS 2, that is). As a side note, I have also read a very nicely written technical argument on why developers are having problems programming for the PS2, which is a bit too complicated to go into here, but if anyone is interested, I can track it down and relay the information to you. Suffice to say that if they can figure it out, games may actually start looking really nice. Instead of like Street Fighter EX3. Moving on, I'd like to tackle the problem of the Dolphin and the X-box. I HAVE read specs on both of them, and keep in mind that I'm not making judgements based on these. I know enough about hardware to say that the specs are damn impressive. Especially the X-box. That thing promises to have absolutely insane graphics. However, I agree with the point that games are all that matter. I don't care if a system can display graphics that look completely real... if the game is anything like Omega Boost for the PSX, I'm going to walk away. However, I'd like to say that it is my personal hope that the X-box (which is being manufactured by Microsoft) will repeatedly crash and give users the blue screen of death. All the time. Seriously, though, if the system has good games, I'll probably end up getting it. I have every major system that has come out, besides some older Sega stuff (face it, the 32X was a piece of junk) except for all that next-gen stuff (dreamcast, PS2, Dolphin, etc) because, well, they cost a lot of money. I'll get them eventually, but I'm really annoyed, because I have to get them ALL. Dreamcast: Marvel vs. Capcom, Power Stone, Shen Mue, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, need I say more? PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2. Hell, I don't care about anything else, just gimme that game. Metal Gear Solid was the best freaking game I've ever played. And the voice acting didn't remind me of resident evil, a definite plus. Dolphin: If they really do make a sequel to Metroid for the Dolphin, or whatever they call it (I think they should've called the N64 Project Reality like they were thinking, it sounds so much cooler), I'm going to have to get it. Metroid, Metroid II, and Super Metroid were all absolutely awesome games. In conclusion, I agree in general with the points of the editorial, especially that games are what matter, but that's no reason to take a console down.
Besides, with games like Star Control II, X-COM, Half-life, Civilization II, Alpha Centauri, Homeworld, Starcraft, Worms: Armegedddon, Unreal Tournament, and so on... the PC rules all anyway! ;) just kidding! It's just as good.
