by Doodle When I first heard of FF VII, I told myself I'd never buy into the hype. Same with VIII. However, I am now the proud owner of both. I stated to my friend that i would NEVER EVER get FF VIII because of the hype and the "newness" of it. What i had lost was my joy of discovering a new game, and playing it to its full extent. I was totally opposed to all the new games, and my friend was in love with them. As the release of FF VIII drew close, my feelings began to shift. What if this game was really good and i didn't play it? I had to find out. Needless to say, renting the game once blew me away enough to buy it. I am one of the few who LOVED the "complex" menu system (which isn't so difficult after a couple of hours, even if you junction everything yourself). The story was different, but i ended up liking the characters. No, they can never touch Terra or Crono in my mind, but they are fun. What I am trying to say is that most of us have lost our pure joy in experiencing a new game. We desperately await the next big thing, and believe it will be the RPG equivalent of the cure for cancer. That's too bad. We need dive into RPGs like we did on our first. Whether it was FF, some obscure title I've never heard of, of the latest RPG out there, we need to create an innocence about us. Then, with our eyes and ears seeing and hearing the game for the first time, we can judge why we really like/dislike it. I was amazed by how much i truly liked FF VIII. Currently Vagrant Story holds my attention until i fall asleep. Many of the fights would stop if people judged RPGs for how we see them. Who cares if the next person hates your favorite game. Maybe they never tried it without prejudice about how it is or should be. Come on people, let's go back to when Santa brought our NES's and we didn't care what was hot. Rediscover the joy in gaming.
