I was having another break, and I managed to sit down from a hectic week... then I thought about something... Something in which my parents told me some time back... three years back. "Hey, what are you doing?!" "I'm..." I was sitting down, Chrono Trigger was on behind me, with my notepad in hand. "Stop doing that and start doing some REAL work! You have an exam to study for and you're doing THIS?" "But..." My father's look brooked no argument. They never thought I was actually serious in considering game playing as anything more than a entertainment thing... I found that my notepad was scrapped some three days later, by a mysterious person... but I have no doubts on what happened. Fortunately for me, I managed to salvage the pad.... And I managed to keep my notes on Chrono Trigger... which I used to write a fan fic a day later for my final internal exam for my school certificate. Then again, what about the people who work for the gaming companies? Those who make the storylines, the graphics, scenery, or the music? Those who design the mapsets, layouts, the engines or test the game? Do they get the same ridicule for working on the projects, when they talk to their friends and family about it, that they're just not putting ridiculous amounts of time into games when they could be doing 'real' work? What about those who work for the magazines, the online information centres? The people who get paid by the hour to write reviews, previews, scoops, walkthroughs and answer questions? Do they get told off for spending what most consider to be absurd amounts of time in what's considered to be an entertainment? Do they get told, go do something real by their family and friends who aren't so much in the know concerning games generally? I could probably say that in both cases they don't... they're respected, they're doing real work. But what about the individual who makes a homepage on the net, showcasing their latest little project? What about those who write editorials to RPGamer, Total RPG, GIA, or other RPG [or otherwise] gaming sites discussing issues on an academic level? What about the people at sites which are there to provide information to the public about certain events? How about those who compose remixes? I can tell you that personally, my parents don't like me doing anything of the sort, and actively try stopping me... in which case I work on things like this at night, when no one is anywhere near awake, or I do it when they're not around. I know young freelance programmers who receive great feedback from their users... but their parents made them move their project outside the house, or at least keep it under wraps, their parents not knowing what they're doing. I know no one who still lives with their parents who actually condone or encourage such activity. My question... why is this the fact? What separates people like us from people at IGN, at magazines like Hyper, Nintendo Magazine System, PC gamer, or companies like Squaresoft, Enix, Capcom, Blizzard or Natsume? Is it money? Well, if the only difference between the people who work in the gaming industry and those who follow it as a deep hobby is money, why aren't we being encouraged then? Why aren't we being encouraged to refine our programming skills, writing ability, or reporting abilities so that we can join this industry and work in it, getting paid for it? Why are we being shut out of the industry from the word go? Why is working in the gaming industry respected, but inspiring to be shunned? I'm afraid I'm going to end it here, because I hear my father coming out of his bedroom... If you want to comment on this, be it that I'm disturbing the status quo, or that you feel that this appeal deserves some consideration, you're just plain interested in how I scored a 23 out of 30 for writing a thirty minute fic, or to say that I'm raving and ranting again, post it to nightshadow_007@angelfire.com. |
