Here's Hoping He Retires This Year

by Ersatz Sobriquet

We live in an age where ungodly things occur. Many people try to understand the things that happen and how they escalated to the point at which they stand. Those that are successful sorely regret their earnest attempts in the end. More than most of the time, figuring things out just results in confusion and bitter feelings. What am I talking about, you might be wondering? It's the situation between Square and Nintendo.

I've been observing all of the proceedings from the very beginning and well, the only conclusion I can make is that someone had to do SOMETHING about that old man. What old man, you might be wondering? Why, the president of Nintendo of Japan. Something must be done to ensure the continued success of a relatively good company. Let me explain to you how I see it in my humble eyes the utter disarray the company (that is, Nintendo) is in.

Whether or not you're a Square fan, if you have any sense at all you do recognize that Square commands an ungodly power that many companies would love to possess. They can make a game, a single game, which can spawn huge sales, tons of fanfics, many fan inspired artwork, and memorable characters that people either love or hate (and will analyze over and over again in editorials, and message boards). People who will buy five different versions of the games' music, and will even demand a sequel or two. Heck, they even have fan-owned web sites about the history of the company and any other related material! That is the kind of power they have. They're even up to the level where hardware companies try their hardest to have them on their list of companies who will support their next-generation system. No other company really has that kind of power.

Normally, a hardware company, oh let's say, like Nintendo, would be elated to have a company like this come AFTER them. Recent news stories confirmed that Square is really trying their hardest to have Nintendo grant them the wish of making software for Nintendo's systems. But is Nintendo happy at all about their request? Oh, of course not. Why, some of you are pondering? Well, let me present the facts to you, my eager assembled flock.

Nintendo, after seeing one of their original partners leave them and make their own system that, to put it bluntly, spanks the Super Nintendo in every regard, decided they needed to compete with them and make a system as well. And they came up with the Nintendo 64. A novel idea, really. A system that pushed 64 bits, 32 more than their competitor, Sony Playstation. This system had just about everything going for it, except for one thing. It used cartridges instead of CD's.

Square, from the get go, noticed that this was not the type of hardware that was adequate enough to fulfill their grandiose ideas for future games. Quickly, they stopped supporting Nintendo and focused on the competition's system, the Sony Playstation. And this was done, not to betray Nintendo, no, but to ensure that their future would remain bright. And it has. Nintendo of course took this the wrong way, and now that they are actually producing hardware that will be of some benefit to Square's as well as Nintendo's future, Nintendo is foolishly cutting them off, still living in the past.

Square only did what any smart company would do, and went to the sources that could make them money. Sony was their answer at the time. Now that Nintendo's technology looks promising, they want to support them once more. A simple concept, if you think about it. If they'll make you money, let them do it, dummy.

Nintendo, though, has, and always has had, an ego problem. They feel Square betrayed them in the past, and they won't let them back into their fold until they have sacrificed to them all of their executives. Once again, in my honest opinion, Nintendo is being extremely stupid and is not looking at the big picture here, namely that they will make a LOT of money. Course, I shouldn't blame the whole company. Really, it's the old man doing all the damage here.

He was the one, along with famed maker of the Mario Brothers, that insisted the confounded system (that is, the N64) use cartridges. He was the one who is pushing the possibility of the Game Boy Advance to do more than play games. Like go online, do your homework, brush your teeth, do your taxes, live your life and the such. He was the one who supported the fact that the Game Cube will have an 8 mm CD, ignoring the fact that it thus cannot play music CDs and DVDs, but I digress. He was probably the genius who hinted that Conker Has a Bad Fur Day. And he IS the one trying to stop Square from making games for his systems.

I'm sure there's some young intern in the offices of Nintendo of Japan the higher ups are paying off to figure out a way to quietly halt Mr. Yamauchi's evil goings. I salute that young man too, because it takes guts to go up again a evil force like that. Well, either that young man stops him, or Mr. Yamauchi simply decides to retire. Whatever happens, something must be done to stop him. It must be done soon and fast because a solid base like Nintendo can not be remembered as the company who fell to the evil machinations of a old man.
