Fool

A beginning and an end. The final step of one journey and the first of another. There is often that time, that moment in life when one asks themselves "What do I do now?" Sometimes the answer is there in front of one's face, often times it takes a bit of soul searching and personal realizations to find one's new dream. When one finds this new dream, this new life's journey, one feels a sense of joy and excitement quite different from the feeling of the mundane, everyday life. When he sees a new line on the horizon, he would naturally seek it out. To yearn for it, as if it were a new and exciting chapter in the book of life. He sets out for parts unknown, more often than not unprepared, but holding on to the dream in his heart.

The Fool's journey begins.

The number zero, I think, perfectly defines the Fool. Zero signifies the birth of new things, and at the same time, the end-all nothingness of the old. It is both the beginning of a new journey, yet all journeys end with it. All things begin with nothing and all things return to nothing, yet from this nothingness holds an endless potential, a potential you cannot find in a predetermined definition. One can only be one, eleven only eleven, yet all of these singularities occur because of the primordial nothing that gives life to all of them.

From this nothing, our hero becomes something. A something that, quite frankly, no one really knows. It is neither set in stone nor on a track of rails. Like the zero that defines the Fool, it is from this blank slate that he carves out his adventure.

Will he save the world or bring it to ruin? Will he save the damsel in distress or lose her forever? No one, not even him.

When you think about it, it is called the Fool for a reason. It is more likely that he is unprepared, perhaps not totally, but the naive immaturity in him is the source of his childlike curiosity, and makes him unknowing of most the ways of the world. With his knapsack, he carries what he thinks he needs, but we all know it's not going to last long. Everything else he needs he would find either in an item box, on the bodies of some random dungeon monster or overpriced in some shop somewhere. Even then, we know that this very same knapsack (or bag with infinite space) would hold some of the treasures that will become important in his journey.

"I'm leaving to join SOLDIER!" says the boy with the spiky blonde hair. With his (potential) love interest with him at the center of town, he expresses his desire to leave town and join an elite combat unit, entrusted with the most important and difficult of missions. At his age we highly doubt he knows anything of combat, much less of how the real world works. Yet, this is his dream, a dream he shares with people and intends to achieve no matter what. It is in this conversation that she makes him promise: "When I'm in a bind, you'll come and save me, right?" In a matter of days he ships out for training, holding on to this dream.

His nation of Highland at war, A young man decides to enter the Unicorn brigade with his best friend. Adopted son of a late and disgraced military general he seeks to prove his worth and his honor on the battlefield and, perhaps (this is debatable) restore honor to the name Genkaku. Himself trained exceptionally in the martial arts, he enters the army hoping to help end the war and bring peace to his divided nation. Seen of by his sister, both friends are shipped of into the battlefield, where their destinies await.

No doubt one can say that they were fools to an extent. Green, inexperienced but full of the adventurous spirit that helps define a hero, they all began their journeys into an exciting but dangerous world.

As the clichéd saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. This step they take is honestly full of uncertainty and danger, but they decide to face it head on. Perhaps it's because they are naive and inexperienced, but they hold on to their ideals and dreams, hoping to make them true.

Thus, again, the Fool takes his first steps into the world.
