There are times in life where we sometimes are just content with letting things be. We look for the more convenient and easy way out of any situation, often blinded to the things happening right in front of us. We tell ourselves that there's nothing we can do, that we really don't care, that it isn't really our problem. We wallow in our self professed impotence and weakness that we simply just watch and let the tides of the world wash us away.
But from the number one is where things multiply. If zero is the originator, then one is where the person identifies his own unique self. A self that, if he tried hard enough, is full of potential and strength needed to continue forward despite what he sees. From his singular self he discovers his own inner strength; an inner strength that helps him create the path in life that he wishes to follow. From here he finds the courage to press on with his decision, no matter how reckless his choices may be. He is not omnipotent, not in the slightest, but he finds a power that could make him greater than the masses of men.
The Magician deals his power outward from the power within.
Every hero faces that first choice which requires courage. More often than not, it's a courage he never knew he had. New to the world and only a few steps in, he faces his first trial that will perhaps shock him or make him question his own capabilities (up to that point). He starts to think, to remember the desire and the dream that first brought him into this world, in order to help him make his decision.
In ways, he is similar to the magician. In order to convince everyone of his skills, he must first convince himself he is capable. The power to bring forth wonder and illusion comes from his own inner power. He knows he is capable, he knows he can do it, and thus everyone else is convinced of his skill and his choices.
It took a top-heavy bartender with a heart of gold (who happens to be his childhood friend and potential love interest) to remind this spiky hair hero just what he wanted to be. 5 years since their last meeting in that town, the ex-SOLDIER had just come to this dirty and dank metropolis, hired as a mercenary for a rebel group called Avalanche. With the job done, he was deciding to leave again when his old friend reminded him of his promise to her. She reminds him of his dream to become a powerful fighter in order to help the weak, and that he promised her that he'd help her once his dream came true. With a past he would rather not talk about, he faces his first real decision of his tale. One could say he chose the right one.
With his entire unit slain at the hands of none other than the kingdom's own crown prince, the young hero is captured by a band of mercenaries fighting under the City State of Jowston, enemies of his own country. In his own attempt to escape he sees for himself the horrors and the evils perpetrated by the very same nation that he served, and at this point the same nation who brands him a traitor. The crown prince feeds the people blatant propaganda and riles inside them a sense of hatred and anger for the supposed massacre of the Unicorn brigade by their "enemies". With nowhere else to go he, his best friend Jowy and sister Nanami, have two choices: Live a life on the run, or join the mercenaries and fight back? One could say the choice is obvious.
They have learned from their first experiences, and the choice has been made. All they can truly do now is continue on forward and see where this choice has taken them. What they do know however, is that now they have a new inner fire that powers them forward. A new courage that will help them face the trials of the future whatever they may be. From this point on they have made a path for them to follow, a path crafted by themselves for themselves.
He has much more to learn, with more room to grow. The power of his own self is the fuel that will sustain him on his journeys.
